Clouds Darken Over Tonight’s (Cancelled) Dead Moon Show
You might want to sit down for this.
Update, 12/7, 6:50 pm: Dead Moon has cancelled their appearance tonight and all scheduled shows. Generation and SK and the Punk Ass Bitches will still perform and the show is now free. Although I haven’t received official word that the band has broken up, this doesn’t bode well. Local Cut will continue to gather more information and report back as quickly as possible. I propose a hunger strike on behalf of all Dead Moon fans until the band plays again.
Original Post: There is a rumor that after nearly 20 years as a band, Dead Moon is breaking up. Of course, at this point, it is utter hearsay: I’ve been unable to reach the band for comment, and none of LC’s key sources for this lead are willing to go on record. But I wouldn’t be writing this if we hadn’t received very strong information from people who we think might know what they’re talking about.
The word is that “something bad happened” on the trio’s two-month European tour that wrapped up just a few days ago, and as a result, “the band is calling it a day” (from separate sources). So, like I said, hearsay. But pretty reliable hearsay. The fact is though, that if you call Dead Moon’s booking agency, you won’t be able to set up a show: They aren’t accepting new dates.
Someone with the handle “Rainbow Songleaf” at the Goner Records bulletin board has also heard the rumors, as has a blogger for Olympia’s Weekly Volcano. But if you take a moment to remember, we’ve all heard this before. Just last March there was a similar rumor kicking around, so I talked to bassist Toody Cole to sort it out. She told me that the band would play until someone dies: “Till death do us part. This band is a marriage—no d-i-v-o-r-c-e.” At that point, Dead Moon had just finished a year-long break because Cole was experiencing tendonitis in her wrist. The present barrage of break-up panic could just be the result of a similar planned hiatus. I mean, it would make sense that a break might be called for after such a long tour.
But we shall see tonight. There has been announcement of a cancellation of shows planned for the end of the month in Portland, Olympia, and Seattle, so I guess there’s a small chance that this could be Dead Moon’s last show. It’s sort of like a date when you suspect that your relationship is going south. Everything could be totally normal—Fred and Toody Cole might even assuage our fears and tell us the rumors are bunk—but every time they start to speak between songs, I know I’ll be thinking, “I hope this isn’t it! I hope this isn’t it!”
Oddly enough, tonight’s appearance will definitely be the last for three members of Generation, which is a shame because in just around 6 months Generation was acquiring quite a buzz. In honor of the departure of Dan Hawthorne, Dave Kaufman, and Steve Powell (and possible demise of the band), I’ve posted a Generation song as Cut of the Day, with more info about that possible break up.
Snivel.
