Explode Into Colors, “Sharpen the Knife” (Unreleased)
When the all-girl trio of Explode Into Colors took the Dekum Manor floor late last Friday for Summer of Luv’s inaugural night, the growing crowd knew they were about to see something bordering on brilliant. Claudia Meza, former member of Hornet Leg and Japanther has always brought a vital frenetic energy to shows and tonight was no different. While Lisa Schonber (of Kickball) and Heather Treadway (who has played with Tender Forever) gracefully melded two drum sets, keys and a tambourine into the mix, Meza grasped a bass and microphone. The resulting sound was a ghostly drone funk that seemed to come from far away, a subterranean punk struggle and a slow dance in one. On “Sharpen the Knife” you can hear the gritty clamoring and jittery funkadelics that make the trio so mesmerizing live.
P.S. This was recorded on a Califone.

says:The show was originally supposed to be at the pizzaria down the street, but the cops shut the place down (via a friendly phone call to the owner) and the show was shuffled over to the Dekum Manor.
That said, this show was the first time I saw Explode into Colors. I’ve never fallen in love with a band so fast before. I had symbols crashing in my head for days after the show.
