MGMT, “Kids,” DJ Koolaid Mo Dance Remix (Unreleased)
I don’t particularly care for east coast group MGMT. I don’t like them enough that, after acquiring its track “Time to Pretend” as a free itunes download, I deleted it while at the same time keeping Sean Kingston’s freebie single “I’m 18″ (an ode to rocking the vote and being 18 (hint: ‘he loves it, he likes it,’ over and over and over again)). Anyway, a visit to DJ Koolaid’s page started the tides a-turning, because I really dig his danced-up version of MGMT’s “Kids.” I may never forgive the pair and their yuppies-in-training buddies for the awful music video for “Time to Pretend,” but I may give MGMT another chance on my stereo…if only in the form of Koolaid remixes. I asked Koolaid to fill us in on how this particular remix came about, what he uses and how he approaches mixes in general:
This song only took a few days to create, since it is fairly simple. I used Reason 3.0. I chose the song because I loved the original sooo much! I just wanted to change it enough to dance to… a little faster, and MO BASS! All of the songs that I remix are songs that I personally love! I cannot remix, or work on a song that I don’t absolutely love, because you have to listen to it a billion times before its done. Some songs that I hear I just automatically know that I am going to remix it, if its good enough. As of lately I have abandoned Reason 3.0 for Ableton’s Live 7. It is much better at what I need it for. I used Live to make my UVS, and Dead Prez remixes.

Koolaid next spins at tomorrow night’s all-ages dance party FNDNCPRTY at Exit Only. More on that to come tomorrow, so stayed tuned…
