Photo Review: Southern Belle and World’s Greatest Ghosts at The Hawthorne Theatre, July 6th 2008

IMG_1134 This past Sunday Omaha’s Tilly and the Wall had not one, but two fine local groups opening up for it at the Hawthorne Theatre. At nine on the dot, World’s Great Ghosts took to the stage for a roughly half hour set. Next came Southern Belle, who even used its set-up time for a miniature set of its own. During Belle’s mic check, the squawks of keyboardist Austin Jackson and hushed projections of bassist Nicole Perry made for a vocal trade-off similar to one that would came later in the show.

While Southern Belle’s set began on shakier musical ground than at some of its recent, absurdly tight performances, the four-piece hit its stride for its final three songs, closing with a strong version of “Oh Tokyo.” The red lights that had shone over the stage were exchanged for near total darkness instead. Concealing Jackson’s Dan Deacon-channeling eyewear, the lack of light unfortunately wasn’t quite able to illuminate the glow-in-the-dark face paint the members had coated themselves with before taking the stage. Ross McLeron sat his guitar aside to take the keyboards, while a freed-up Jackson made his way around the stage in full frontman glory.
