Situations: An Extended Q&A (audio file!) with the Gossip’s Brace Paine
Sitting in the lap of luxury at the Ace Hotel, Nathan Howdeshell (aka Brace Paine) and I got together for a chat. With a pair of pugs trying desperately to climb into our laps, we spoke about his club night Situations. If you read the Situations profile in the paper this week, you’re already hip to how much of his time is spent on Gossip related activities, his vast record collection and his plans for Situations. The sporadic club night housed at Dunes has already played host to the Kills, No Bra and the Long Blondes, but who shall be next to perform? He’s got a host of artists he’d like to fly out specifically to play the night (since most bands are too wasted after their regular sets). Potential artists include Londoners These New Puritans and Australia’s Catcall; who, while fairly underground at the moment, have the catchy rhymes to become a must-have import for all electro lovers. Plus there’s Paine’s goal to take Situations international by year end.
Other topics of conversation serve to answer a swirl of questions unrelated to Situations, but are just as pertinent. Does Paine have a hand in the ownership of Dunes? What exactly is Gossip After Dark? What does he think of former tourmates Panther and the avant-garde acts expansion into a duo? His departure from No No No Disco at Tube. What about his name? Does he actually want people to call him Brace Paine? Get the whole story by listening in to this podcast of our interview. Hint about the name: it came from The Price is Right. And before Drew Carey.
