31 Knots, “Compass Commands,” Worried Well (Polyvinyl)
First off, a roll call of sorts.
Ladies: “Yes!”
Are you ready?: “Yes!”
Alright so who can tell me the universal rule of thumb?: “Kill or be killed”
Correct!
And now an admission: I kind of hated this song when I first heard it. And most of 31 Knots’ new record, the just-released Worried Well. I can’t really put a finger on it, but something just wasn’t sitting well; the bouncy, strutting bar-room piano line; the theatrical call-and-response vocals; Joe Haege’s Man Behind the Curtain vocals. Maybe I was scared of the polish, weary of the harsh tone many tracks take, or just afraid to embrace the PROG. After a few spins, though,”Compass Commands” didn’t just stick—it become virtually all I wanted to listen to for an entire weekend. 31 Knots have really channeled the chaotic, cacophonous tendencies of its live show into a tight, compact and catchy rock song. Just give it more than one cursory listen.
