Live Review: Fleshtone at Backspace, Thursday, Nov. 6

IMG_1749 Dressed to the nines in designs by frontwoman Jayme Hansen, Fleshtone launched Siren Nation’s 2008 festival on Thursday night to a segregated audience. Kicking off its set at 9:30pm, the quartet wasn’t performing only to those gathered inside around the low stage, but to a throng of onlookers gathered outside in front of the middle window of the venue. Everything went well for the group until midway through the show when the vocals went out. Never fear, Fleshtone had choreographed dance numbers independent from its lyric driven-tunes ready to fill the gap. After performing an interpretive dance piece involving claw-like gestures and a burial ritual, the microphone returned to service, allowing Hansen to belt her heart out once again for two more songs. A gaggle of drunken teenagers made their way into the venue during the final song and that’s when the crowd finally broke it down on the dance floor, turning Backspace into a disco inferno fit for Fleshtone’s electro anthems.
