Floater: Floater + King Black Acid = Romantic Explosion (Eugene, OR)
What can be said here that isn’t already known to those who were there? A crazed, bellowing, swooning, sold out crowd of celebrants packed the McDonald theater in the otherwise laid back town of Eugene on Saturday night. I’m not sure what exactly the air was thick with, but if I could bottle that air and unleash it into concerts around the world I would, as a favor to mankind. It was the kind of evening that people miss every day and have no idea how much of them has evaporated into space. The kind of evening that sticks in the minds of those who were there, and crawls like kudzu over everything else in there.
Do I sound overly enthusiastic? Perhaps it is my bias. Or it could simply be that I was there, breathing it, and now I can only try to put it into words.
King Black Acid, for those of you who have missed out on the last 10 years of brilliant music produced here in our own verdant land, justflat-out fucking rocks. They take you on a trip. And from what I’ve seen it is a trip you will want to take. They came out and played their hearts out on that lofty stage.
From the moment King Black Acid struck its final note we were ready. We waited for what seemed like an eternity backstage just bouncing in place or swirling glasses, or just staring at the darkness waiting for the flashlight signal.
As soon as we crossed into the light we could feel that the people gathered there were glowing in some way. We fed on that like mother’s milk and got more powerful and dangerous every moment. The songs blew out of the band like smoke. And in the end, when King Black Acid came back on stage to join us for a final song, we knew that there was no air left in the room.
And now we chomp at the bit, waiting as patiently as we can for the next show.

says:What was that air thick with? Excitement? Desire? Passion? It all led up to one epic show. Helter Skelter rocked my brain right out of my head!

says:I do believe that the air was thick from the atomization of particles that fills the nanoseconds preceding a nuclear detonation.

says:What a great god damn show!!! Floater brings it every single time and is hands down the best live concert experience a person can ever witness. They have been drawing the same sold out crowds for years and are still a secret waiting to explode on the national scene.

says:Would that I could have been there… It’s so great to read these tour diaries, especially for us who couldn’t make it to the shows. Thanks, WWeek for publishing, and thanks RW for sharing

says:I so wish I could’ve been there. It’s been too long since this TX gal has been to an OR Floater show–it’s like you’re in a completely different world.

says:I don’t know what Terry is babbling about. I think he’s stuck in 1994. I was at the show, and they played a really get set! From Evangeline and Tell the Captain, to In Transition and The Simplest Way of Life. Plus tons of good songs like An Apology, Ghost in the Making, Mexican Bus, and Clean Plastic Baby.
This was my first McDonald Theater show, and I think I was pleasantly spoiled! The light show was phenomenal.

says:Hey Terry, go to http://www.rotyouwill.com to the forums, check out the setlist from this show, and tell me it wasn’t “hard rock’n”. Did you happen to go to the Secret House show in Veneta this summer? If you did, you would have gotten to see Thin Skin. But I guess they don’t play that stuff anymore, right? Any band has to evolve, and Floater is doing it the right way.

says:thank you for an amazing show, and for writing about it!!!
and honestly, i’m happy with whatever floater plays. sure, i probably have more of a “magical” time when they play a set list full of my favorite songs, but even if they play the handful of songs that i don’t listen to often or don’t care for as much, they always play them well.
in fact, any song that i thought i didn’t really like of theirs, i have always ended up liking after hearing it live. which has really changed the way i listen to floater altogether….it’s pretty awesome to be able to go to a concert and know that it’ll be awesome no matter what

says:Laura, you nailed it. There’s always been a few songs that I don’t listen to as much as the others. I never got into Crusatyr, for instance, til I heard that bombshell go off live. Now I play it all the time at home and look forward to hearing it again at every show.

says:The fact that Floater is still playing after so many years here on the scene is testament to their talent. No one leaves a bigger floater in PDX’s musical toilet than this band. I heart you Floater. You float my boat. You can float my device any time, sugar. Juanita R., I was right there up from in the middle too. I don’t know exactly what the air was filled with that night either, but it was indeed awesome. A truly amazing performance! These guys kept that energy floating, hands down/no doubt.
