Big Show This Friday at Disjecta’s New Digs

sonnyWe were so excited about Obama and the smoking ban and Sam (oh, Sam) that we totally dropped the ball on Disjecta’s first rock and roll show! Dumb us!

The show is this Friday! It’s a really good lineup! The space is huge and potentially in your neighborhood! We are atoning for screwing up by using too many exclamation points!

Headlining the Friday gig is San Francisco troubadour Sonny Smith, who brings folk-pop that sounds as melodically inspired by the Magnetic Fields’ Stephin Merritt as it does musically inspired by Bob Dylan. The recorded versions of his tunes bask in lo-fi glory like perfectly arranged four track demos, plus gorgeous western backup vocals and minus the buzz.

But jeez, don’t listen to me, listen to Sonny. Here’s “Day in the Life of a Heel” from his latest album, Fruitvale:

Nice, eh? Well, Fruitvale came out way back in ‘06, but that’s why Sonny’s in town (you know, in addition to entertaining you). He’ll be recording at Disjecta tomorrow through Saturday, and it sounds like the sessions are open to the public, so poke your head in if you’re out in NoPo and looking for something to do. That was, after all, how dreams were made before American Idol went on the air.

Opening acts for Friday’s show are the ever-entertaining and genre-busting Evolutionary Jass Band and San Francisco folky/creepy trio the Sandwitches. The show’s at 8 pm, it’s $7 and 21+. The new Disjecta is at 8371 N Interstate.
