Amanda Richards, “Cookies and Whiskey,” Who Has Your Heart (Self-released)
I have only been interning at WW for a week now and have already discovered the key to Casey and Michael’s hearts: swag. These dudes love free shit (but really, who doesn’t?).
This morning Michael got called to the front desk. As he descended the stairs, he felt like he was in trouble, certain he’d be sent to the principal’s office, or even worse, detention. But to his surprise, a bubblegum pink box sat glowing on the desk at the end of the staircase. We all know that box, and we all know its presumable contents—a dozen scrumptious Voodoo Doughnuts. This box was no different. Well, it was a little different…
There were twelve doughnuts of the voodoo variety tucked snuggly in the box, but they were not alone. A flask of Seagram’s 7 whiskey (yeah, I thought they only made gin too) and a CD accompanied the sugary little angels. That CD was Who Has Your Heart by local bohemian country songstress Amanda Richards, and the swag was in reference to the last track on the album, “Cookies & Whiskey.”
The song is in the same style as your typical country tune: Richards’ rustic vocals describe how she “drowns [her] sorrows in pastries and booze,” as the twang of a steel guitar slides in the background, accompanied by simple acoustic guitar chords and symbol-heavy drums. However, where most cute young female country singers are prim and proper, Richards takes a different route, singing, “I got a big ass and bad gas and heart broken blues.” You go girl!

As a reminder for all you other bands or musicians who would like us to consider you for Cut of the Day, Casey loves custard-filled doughnuts and Michael has a taste for scotch.

says:It’s not often we see lyrics that are honest, funny and pithy all at the same time. And sung by someone who interprets them so well is a bonus.

Anyone who has not seen this talented artist should go to the Aladdin Theater on February 20 when she makes her official release of her 3rd album. Check her out, http://www.myspace.com/amandarichardsband then go support your local (almost) starving artist.
