Celebrate New Cafe With Jared Mees, Boy Eats Drum Machine, and Free Hot Dogs
I love me some Jared Mees & the Grown Children. The band’s last record, Caffeine, Alcohol, Sunshine, Money was one of my favorites in 2008, but the record’s songs—especially singalong standout “The Tallest Building in Hell”—sound even better when the band is buzzed and belting their hearts out onstage. So, understandably, I’m bummed that I missed out on posting Mees and Co.’s next show, which just happens to be tomorrow night. In honor of the opening of the OZ Cafe—a new joint in the old Caffe d’Italia space (1720 NW Lovejoy St, Suite 121) located next to Mees’ Tender Loving Empire—the band is playing a FREE show with Boy Eats Drum Machine and Yeah Great Fine. And, uh, there’s also going to be free hot dogs, burgers, veggie burgers and coffee courtesy of owner Lucas Mollerstuen. Plus cheap PBR tallboys, because, you know, it wouldn’t be a proper Portland party without it. The whole party starts at 7 pm and runs through midnight, which means you can show up after the Blazers dismantle the Washington Wizards.
For the uninitiated, here’s two videos of the Grown Children playing at the Knitting Factory in NYC during the PDX @ CMJ event.
“Back in Portland we do like a little like crazy beat boxing at the beginning, and since you’re all so excited about standing at the front, you can also be excited about doing a beat box.”

says:The first Free Hotdogs 7″ was totally amazing, and from what I’ve seen, they tend to play a lot of car dealerships and neighborhood festivals. Their mystique is a big part of their allure, since they have no myspace page, nor any photos online. I’m sure they’ll be on the next PDX Pop Now comp.
