Bombs Into You, “Slink,” Metaphorically Yours [Vol. 1] (Self-released)
I’ve gotta say, I’m a sucker for songs without choruses.
“Slink,” the first track off Portland outfit Bombs Into You’s newly released EP, Metaphorically Yours [vol. 1], is one of those songs. The track begins with a catchy keyboard riff atop an oscillating synthesizer. Incrementally, the rest of the instruments add to the layering. Bass drum steadies the beat, and then guitar comes in, harmonizing with the keys. After a one minute and seventeen second buildup, the last layer is placed: vocals. Jared Jenson half sings, half speaks the lyrics, which allows the song to push forward although the instrumentation is static.
About a minute after the vocals begin they cut out abruptly, along with all other music except the keys and guitar, still playing that harmonizing riff. Suddenly, the symbols crash and Jenson softly begins to sing again.
A little more than halfway through the track, the drum beat changes and Jenson’s vocals intensify as he begins to yell more than sing. The vocals become repetitious; conversely, the instrumentation starts to shift—first with the drums, then with the guitar and keys. By the end of the song, the music has done a one-eighty. Jenson’s vocals cut out for the last time, and we are left with keys and strings being plucked in a staccato style, with the synthesizer holding it all together. The sounds muddle as the song continues to swell until the last note is struck.
Bombs Into You plays KPSU this Friday at 5 pm, and releases Metaphorically Yours [Vol. 1] on Saturday night at Kelly’s Olympian with Bryan Free. That one’s $5, starts at 9 pm and is 21+.
