Download Some Free Local Hip-Hop Albums, Whydontcha?
Another Best New Band poll, another list devoid of hip-hop. So I’m going to make it my personal mission to introduce you to some folks in said community over the course of this year.
First up, Serge Severe, who is offering his entire Orangutan Slang EP (a b-sides collection of sorts from his even better Concrete Techniques) for free RIGHT HERE. Download that one, because it is really good.
You can see Serge at Berbati’s on May 15 with Dyme Def and Saigon, or at the much-anticipated Focused Noise vs. Sportin’ Life show (a crazy Portland vs. Seattle show, also at Berbati’s) on May 23.
And then there’s your old-school download for the day. Oldominion producer/MC Taco Neck—who has posted a lot of good stuff on his blog lately—is currently offering that NW mega-crew’s Zero for free. It’s a history lesson, people! Here’s Neck on the album:
I feel this collection really embodies what Oldominion was. Songs like “Eight Arms” and “Four Horsemen” can never be duplicated. Not by Oldominion; not by anybody. They exist solely in a pre-millenial bubble filled with hot-knife smoke and Dick’s wrappers.
While you can’t exactly see Oldominion right now (a reunion show is usually in the works), you can usually see some offshoot projects on any given week in Portland or Seattle. Here’s the near-complete roster.
Let’s see if we can’t convince some more Portland hip-hop artists to offer their throwback albums for free in the name of teaching the locals what NW hip-hop is all about!

says:cool. i think wweek should devote an entire week’s music section to hip hop soon. there is so much going on that just doesn’t seem to be getting covered…
as for the BNB list i think alot of us just pick our favorites of our friends bands… and alot of the great emcees and dj’s around town that i know of are not new and have been holding it down for years…. i know ‘new’ is relative…

says:It’s true Michael obviously had talent, but I find the whole deal with the memorial that was on TV for hours was rediculous and so over the top. It was to the point of disgusting & nauseating. P L E A SE! There were young men coming home in a casket with a flag draped over it. Now that is newsworthy. These young soldiers did something for their country. May you all get what is important in life.
