SANDPEEP LEAK WEEK: Iame, “Show’s Over Now (Demo)”

iameI think Iame was my first favorite Sandperson. Like any fan, I’ve gone through phases since then of thinking a handful of other peeps are best. But Iame’s 2005 debut, Noise Complaints, meshed floor-shaking beats with thoughtful lyricism and a lot of character, and I was hooked on it. (Then he made that Shins remix , which was also real dope.)

Aside from his Mercer mixin’, we haven’t heard much from Iame in the past few years. But the MC (one of the priveledged few who holds membership in both Sandpeople and Oldominion) is gearing up to rock us once again with I Am My Own Enemy, which will drop July 21.

On “Show’s Over Now,” Iameezy reintroduces himself and his region, attempting to elevate himself over the phony rappers that preceded him, going so far as to drop a reference to Cormac McCarthy’s The Road in describing the blighted musical landscape around him. He also announces his intention to cultivate a culture of rap akin to the mid-late ’80s golden era of Chicago sports. The difference being that Iame is “playing by my own independent rules/ I never lose, I don’t really get it, dudes/ Never pay me dues/ But they think they got credit due/ I think they confused.”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

But Iame’s going to need a crew if he hopes to turn Portland hip-hop into a dynasty. That’s why we’re running unreleased Sandpeople tracks all week long. Seeya tomorrow.
