LC Blog Roundup! E-I-E-I-O!
I’ve got all sorts of great stuff for today’s roundup, courtesy of the Hush Records blog and a nice publicist at Sub Pop who told us about a new Blitzen Trapper EP (!) two days ago. Too bad we were on deadline and scheming ways for the Blazers to make a big move during the NBA Draft. So here’s all the news you need to know, from my desk to yours.
- The folks at NPR’s music desk really like folk music—especially when it comes straight from Portland. So it’s not really a surprise that the widely syndicated show World Cafe would feature the music of our own Laura Gibson. NPR has profiled Gibson before, but this time we don’t just get to hear Gibson and her backing band play songs like “Where Have All the Good Words Gone?” and “Spirited,” we also get to pleasuring of listening to her talk to host David Dye about growing up in the logging town Coquille, how she’s trying to become a better songwriter, and collaborating with producer Tucker Martine. It’s a great interview, and worthy of a few minutes of listening during your lunch break.
Also, Hush Records founder Chad Crouch made a lovely little “official fan video” for Gibson’s haunting “Shadows on Parade.” It’s all gorgeous black and white footage from the turn of the century, and totally vibes with one of my favorite songs of the year.

- Hush also has a few videos from a recent Mississippi Studios show with Nick Jaina and Run on Sentence. Jaina plays two new songs, sans most of his backing band, and they’re so sparse and pretty that you can even here someone coughing in the audience. Hurray for hi-def!
And here’s Run On Sentence (with Jaina borrowing someone’s glockenspiel) playing the unreleased track “Do the Jellyfish”:
- Even though Blitzen Trapper’s last record, Furr, was released less than a year ago, it appears the band already has new material on the horizon. Until then, BT fans should get a kick out of the Black River Killer EP, set for release on August 25 via Sub Pop. The 7 song collection features the single “Black River Killer” along with 6 other songs that have only been available at shows as limited edition CDRs but never formally released to the public. Score. Here’s the tracklist:
1. Black River Killer
2. Silver Moon
3. Going Down
4. Shoulder Full of You
5. Preacher’s Sister’s Boy
6. Black Rock
7. Big Black Bird
There’s a lotta “black” in here, but my bet for the best track is “Preacher’s Sister’s Boy,” which seems like the product of a random online generator to name the new Blitzen Trapper hit single. Sounds like a winner, huh?
- Welcome to PDX, Patrick Porter! The singer-songwriter, poet and novelist just moved to town from a stint in the Big Apple, and he’s playing a show on July 11 at Mississippi Pizza. Porter is on the awesome local label Greyday Records, and his new one A Swan At Smiley’s is out now.
- Finally, Modest Mouse has announced it will release its new 7-inch single, Autumn Beds, on June 23rd. Here’s all the deets you need to know:
This special 7” will be on limited edition black vinyl with an embossed sleeve and individually numbered to
4000. This new single includes never before released tracks: “Autumn Beds” backed with “Whale Song.” Modest Mouse fans will be familiar with the band’s new tune “Whale Song” as it became a recent staple in the band’s live shows. This special vinyl will be available nationally at retail, with the songs also offered on iTunes.
