Grey Anne: Anti-materialist meanderings in Eugene (Eugene, OR)
PWRFL Power is playing as I type. Kaz is hooting like an owl and diddling the guitar in artistically dissonant jazz chords. He’s flipping his bangs in rhythm. The lights are dimmed, which they weren’t for me and Cap Lori. I imagine that he requested that they dim them, and it’s sure an excellent call. A bright coffeeshop doesn’t feel very hospitable to performance—trust me; I just toughed it. Never again. From now on, I’m always asking about lighting before I begin.
There’s too much to keep track of. Lost a piece of my guitar stand, so now my guitar falls over. Lost my strap locks, so my guitar falls off. My guitar took no fewer than three spell-breaking plunges during my set. In one, I caught it, and it dangled precariously while I continued to sing. Another time, it buggered the loop of “Superlazy” with an unceremonious clang. In effect, my songs came off like lovely parcels, delivered by a drunk Santa. Gotta fix my stuff again. Stuff, man. Machinery. Can I wax hippierific for a moment? (I mean, when in Eugene…) I hate that there is stuff. That I have to use all this accoutrement to get my vision across. Furthermore, that I have to inhabit a body. That I must exercise and eat right to even make it work. What a hassle. The machines, man.
ANYhow…
Tennessee and Kaz make really good car-mates. Kaz calls her “tennie,” like a shoe. Tennie: A cute ked.
Kaz sings love songs to both men and women, and it seems like Tennessee does too, although her lyrics are more surreal. I think when you have an artistic temperament, you recognize the lovability of everyone and the infinity of possibility, personal preference notwithstanding. These guys do, and I do, anyway.
We just met a college radio girl from U of O. Maybe I’ll do a college radio show sometime. I promise not to drop my guitar.
The Wandering Goat was pretty tame tonight. Not too packed, but very chill and friendly. Carrot ginger soup, wooden tokens for drink tickets, coffee and tea for free. When we left, I promised them shout-outs. Wandering Goat. Find it sometime.
