MFNW Adds Glacial Pace Showcase
If you thought the initial lineup for WW’s MusicfestNW looked a little thin, then this is reason to celebrate. I’m pretty sure everyone will be stoked about this. On Sunday, September 20—technically the day after Musicfest, but it’s now been extended to four days—Modest Mouse will headline a showcase for Glacial Pace, the label started by MM’s own Isaac Brock. Two local bands, the much buzzed about Morning Teleportation and the very Modest Mouse-y (though still great) Mimicking Birds, join the headliners and friends Love as Laughter at the Crystal Ballroom. I remember seeing Love as Laughter open for Modest Mouse and Built to Spill numerous times in late early aughts, so it’s good to see them getting back in bed together.
Modest Mouse joints a lineup feauring Sunny Day Real Estate, the Get Up Kids, Bad Brains, Girl Talk, Titus Andronicus, Mudhoney, Swollen Members, Grand Duchy (Frank Black and his wife’s new group) and John Vanderslice, and Beach House. Phew. Full details below:
On Sunday, September 20th MusicfestNW brings you an evening of music featuring artists from Portland record label Glacial Pace Recordings. The line-up includes one of music’s up and coming artists, Love as Laughter, plus two homegrown acts, Mimicking Birds and Morning Teleportation and will be topped off with a performance by Modest Mouse. This will be the show you can’t afford to miss! The Crystal Ballroom 1332 W. Burnside St. All Ages.
Tickets for this incredible showcase go on sale July 9th at 10:00 am and are available through Ticketmaster.com, Ticketswest.com (and all Ticketswest brokers) as well as at the Crystal Ballroom box office. Entry to the show is also available with a MusicfestNW wristband or VIP wristband. For detailed information about wristbands check out http://www.musicfestnw.com.

says:Nice un-necessary dismissal: Mimicking Birds are summed up as “very Modest Mouse-y” based on what? One song? Fine, fine, you followed it up with a “though still great,” but the point is that when you write something like that here, most take it as absolute fact.
In the context, you’re presenting them as a rip-off afterthought, when anyone who’s seen Nate Lacy’s band live knows that there’s something special going on there. Do you have to start tearing down already? Why not take out those destructive energies on someone whose current work merits it….like Modest Mouse.

(post author) says:Hey Jim-Bob,
I see your point, but I definitely didn’t intend for it to come off as destructive. It’s hard to deny that Mimicking Bird’s recorded material—especially the song I was listening to at the time, “Burning Stars”—bears a strong resemblance to The Moon and Antartica-era Modest Mouse. But you have a great point: Mimicking Birds are far from a “rip-off afterthought,” and my lazy description doesn’t do them much justice.

says:Okay, well if you’re going to be that remorseful about it, in re-reading my first missive I was a bit harsh, and I apologize for that. “Burning Stars” was the “one song” to which I was referring, and I can see your point as far as that goes. I would just hope that people give this band a chance on their own merits, because they’ve got a damned fantastic debut coming out.
No, I’m not in any way affiliated with the band, label, etc.
Anyway, again, apologies.
