Wampire, “Orchards,” Wampire (Gnar Tapes)

thugpireA few weeks ago, a song called “Orchards” appeared on the Kill Rock Stars blog without much fanfare. I’d been hearing nothing but good things about the group behind the track, Wampire, but had only caught a few minutes of the band’s set at a house show. After listening to “Orchards” obsessively since then, I have to say I’m pretty damn excited about these guys.

Wampire is the duo of Rocky Tinder and Eric Phipps, who both play sing, play guitar, and write some of the most dreamy, breezy late-night pop songs around. “Orchards” is the best of the bunch, a whistling, sun-soaked track that glides along on a martial drum machine pattern and a blissful, wordless chorus. Both Tinder and Phipps told me that they try to achieve a balance between dance jams and slow jams, but their best tracks fall somewhere in the middle; both “Orchards” and Wampire’s other standout, “Wooby Dooby,” are pop songs that you can still move your feet to.

And though dancing is definitely part of Wampire’s MO, I think they both know that life isn’t just one big party. “It’s so fun to be so goddamn young/ But it won’t last forever,” sings Tinder, before the song unfolds into electric guitar bliss. The truth hurts sometimes, huh?
