The Wail is NOT Closing
Late last night I received a phone call from Lucy Greene, one of the residents of Northeast all ages house venue The Wail, to set the record straight: the Wail is not closing. Despite reports in various media outlets in town (including a scoop in our own paper that had already gone to press), the Wail is indeed live and well and definitely NOT looking for new residents and owners to keep the space alive.
The confusion mostly stems, according to Greene, from a voicemail message she left for Adam Keller of Rererato informing him that she was moving out. “I told him that I was moving out but not moving on,” Greene says over the phone. She asked for Keller to help spread the word looking for a new roommate, and instead Keller misheard her and sent out an email “indicating that the Wail is closing and in need of new management.”
Instead, the Wail actually has found a new resident and—despite the fact that the three women who founded it have moved out of the house—is still alive and kicking as one of the few viable art spaces and all ages music spots in town. Open since February, the Wail has hosted shows by K Records founder Calvin Johnson, Arrington de Dionyso (and his band Old Time Relijun) and White Rainbow, among others. Shows will continue, with more announcements coming soon from a newly designed website.
“The Wail never had any intention of closing, and we have spent a lot of effort interviewing people to make sure that the day-to-day Wail is in good hands as a venue and a cooperative living space,” Green says.
We regret the mistake, and I’m glad the Wail is still open. Portland needs more all ages spots in town, and this morning I’m happy that we don’t have to say au revoir to one more.
