Monsters of Folk Contest Winners Announced!

Phew! It’s been a really tough 18 hours or so. We displayed and emailed the pictures around the WW office, and of the seven entries to our contest, three clear favorites emerged. Then we got it whittled down to two. But alas, the contest was tied dead even between Ben’s crazy, world-exploding monster and Rachel’s campfire monsters chowing on the bones of what we can only assume is Conor Oberst.

So, trapped in a dead-heat, we forwarded the two images to our friends at Fantagraphics Books, publishers of—among other wondrous titles—the Beasts series. These folks deal with fine art (both low and high) on a daily basis, so we figured they had better eyes than us.

The Fanta office voted 3-1 for (drumroll please…) Rachel’s MS Paint campfire scene! “This artist is either incredibly incompetent or a post-modern genius,” they responded. “Regardless, the result is hilarious.”

Enjoy tomorrow night’s show on us, Rachel, your name will be on the guest list with a big ol’ +1 next to it.

But because we’re such sweet people, and because we were astounded at the time and energy that went into Ben’s piece, we’re awarding him a pretty sweet runner-up prize. It’s a photo book called Motley Crue: Visual History 1983 – 2005, and there’s lots of blood in the pictures. Again, seemed appropriate.

But let’s have a round of applause for all the entries, which were really, honestly fantastic across the board. Usually I just say that about our contest entries but this time I really mean it. Keep on making art, folks!
