New Videos: Josh Martinez! Ghosties! Water!

martinezNothing I love more than a video round-up. Especially when Josh Martinez is involved. Dude puts out more videos than Madonna in her heyday, but there’s a pretty high level of quality control on them, too. Especially on this one, directed by the fabled Stuey Kubrick (purported to be the “pervert nephew” of one Stanley Kubrick. This single, though, is one of Mr. Martinez’s finest to date. How this man has dodged international stardom is a total mystery to me (in fact, he is so huge a star in his native Canada that he must don a mustache to disguise his face: True story). Point is, if you can watch this video—a Fear in Loathing pastiche that’s familiar right down to the Steadman-esque bats and paint splatters swooping from above—and refrain from smiling, you and I just aren’t going to get along. Type Josh Martinez into YouTube for another dozen or so great videos. I love this man.

Want more trippy shit? You’re in luck! This next video, directed by local artiste Matthew Ross, features Ghosties godhead Devin Gallagher holding down every instrument (well, his Typhoon bandmate Tyler Ferrin helps out on the tuba) at once—neat camera tricks, Mr. Ross!—and looking sort of disturbed while doing so. Gallagher throws down some raps of his own on “Cuffs Off,” keeping it real with the Super Mario and Brandon Roy references (you might think you hear a Greg Oden reference, too, but we’re pretty sure he’s shouting out Odin, the ruler of Asgard). Overdriven and angsty as always, we love to see Gallagher following his muse when it leads him down this crazy, formidable grunge-crunk road.

We warn you that the ending of this video is disturbing. And is there a Multiplicity reference in there somewhere?

And now for something completely different. “The Only One,” by NEP’s own Water. I know very little—okay, nothing—about Water, but I’m certainly glad I came across this pimptastic ode to the high life. And now that I’ve checked out the man’s MySpace page (see the “Man Behind the Music” features to get to know him), I can see that he’s no spring chicken in the local rap game. I mean, check out those rings! Check out those ladies! My favorite lyrics: “Nothing but the best/ That’s what I require/ My Pimpin’s so smooth but it’s hot like fire/ I roll around town, big pimp, skinny tires/ I’m parking-lot-pimping, outside of Fred Meyers.”

Why can’t every day be this packed with Portland video awesomeness?
