[LO-FI FUZZ] The Raveonettes have come a long way since their debut in 2002. Sure, the Danish duo still sounds like a soundtrack for the imagined 1950s Jesus and Mary Chain beach movie, but the 2009 release of In and Out of Control provides a softer and more melodic side. The songs are longer (almost four minutes!) and more developed, breaking out of their traditional fuzzy two-chord mold. Though they are more stripped-down than the almost-poppy Pretty in Black, the Raveonettes have never been so focused on bringing their engaging vocals to the forefront of the wall of sound. IAN RASMUSSEN. 9 pm. 830 E Burnside St., 231-9663. $15 advance, $17 day of show. 21+.

[KRAUTROCK] The following was computer translated into German, then back in English. Although this event skipped one years to pay tribute, once more courage Portland tribute bands, some of the greatest rock music ever exploratory. In the early seventies, Germany had a monopoly on the driving beats and psychedelic rock minimalism. Can, Neu, Faust, Amon Duul II, and Tangerine Dream are names that you may have run before. For some of these groups are just as influential and important as the Stones, Who, or Zeppelin. Get your head together and tour with a crazy cast of the craziest bands Portland as they pummel you from Wolf city in a rocky evening. NATHAN CARSON. 9 pm. 203 SE Grand Ave., 232-0056. $7. 21+.

Swollen Members may be the hardest thing to come out of Canada since hockey, but that doesn’t mean the Vancouver-based rappers are thick. Most of Swollen Members’ guns are metaphorical in nature—even if Mad Child and Prevail dedicate an entire track to a porn star on new release Armed to the Teeth—and its acts of violence and bravado come wrapped in elegant rhyme schemes reminiscent of those from Cypress Hill and Seattle’s Grayskul. Armed to the Teeth is packed with minimalist beats that remind of early Wu-Tang and Camp Lo releases. But despite the audio hallmarks from groups of yesteryear, these Canucks sound right at home in 2009—and 2009 is scary as hell. CASEY JARMAN. 9 pm. 3862 SE Hawthorne Blvd., 233-7100. $15 in advance, $18 at door.

[AUTUMN SWEATER] The worst part about being a music fan in autumn is a thing I like to call “fall hibernation.” As the rain starts to pick up and the sun sets before many of us get off work, it becomes harder to go out at night. Shows are great and all, but sometimes it’s just too tempting to stay inside, drink tea and catch up on the past few weeks of Mad Men. Tonight is one occasion when you will totally regret remaining housebound, as Laura Gibson—singer of gorgeous folk laments and baker of a mighty fine pie—plays her last “solo” show of the year. Come January, Gibson will begin to focus on her collaboration with sound architect Ethan Rose, but she promises this show will focus on her oeuvre with the help of an able backing band (Sean Ogilvie and Micah Rabwin of Musee Mecanique), which will take the songs from 2009’s lovely Beasts of Seasons and make them sound even better live. MICHAEL MANNHEIMER. 9 pm. 3939 N Mississippi Ave., 288-3895. $12. 21+.

[^^^]Rock the Socks: Alan Singley, Jacob Johnson, Noah Beck, Pedal Home and the Lost Highwaymen
[GOOD CAUSE] Nothing makes for a good benefit show like a good dose of Alan Singley. The bespectacled and perpetually smiley Singley performs solo minus his Pants (Machine), and we’ve heard that he has enough new songs already built up to finish a new record—even though the sunny orchestrated pop of Feelin’ Citrus dropped just over two months ago. It’s also just starting to get cold, so this is the best time of year for a sock drive. All donations go straight to P:ear, a killer nonprofit that helps out homeless youth in Portland. MICHAEL MANNHEIMER. 6 pm. 338 NW 6th Ave., 226-6677. Donations. All ages.

[^^^]Siren Nation Festival: Tender Forever, Y La Bamba, Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside, The I’s
Year after year, the Siren Nation festival has packed its music festival with the best and the brightest musical acts Portland has to offer. And while this year’s bill is scaled back a bit in star-power, it has suffered no loss in talent. Opening night features appearances from clever pop songsmith Grey Anne, funky folkie Emily Wells, ballsy Americana singer-songwriter Star Anna and one of Portland’s most underrated pop outfits, Lovers. Tomorrow’s lineup is just as strong, with dance-pop diva Melanie Valera’s Tender Forever joining forces with folk-pop force of nature Y La Bamba to headline a bill that also includes Portland throwback-pop breakout act Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside and garage rock act The I’s. Phew! There’s not one big dumb rock band or pretty/vapid songwriter on the whole bill, making our job easy and the Siren Nation fest pretty dang inspirational, especially for young female music fans. 8 pm. 125 NW 5th Ave., 248-1030. $12 advance, $15 day of show. 21+.

[^^^]Dinosaur Jr., Lou Barlow & The Missingmen, Violent Soho
[MODERN CLASSIC]  In the mid-’80s and early ’90s, Dinosaur Jr. was riding high as one of the founding fathers of the alt-rock movement. With the 2007 release of Beyond, however, Dinosaur Jr. proved that even a 25-year-old band can have its best days ahead of it. Even though the long hair has gone gray and the baggy shirts had to be taken out a bit, frontman J Mascis’ melodic vocals and shredding guitar solos arguably stand up better today than when the group first disbanded in 1997. Touring now in support of 2009’s Farm (which is a spiritual successor of 1994’s Without a Sound, if not better), the band is back to its trio of original members and its apex is hopefully still far, far away. IAN RASMUSSEN. 9 pm. 128 NE Russell St., 284-8686. $22 advance, $24 day of show. 21+.
