[BIG PIANIST] There is a certain segment of the population for whom solo piano is just never going to work; it’s always going to put them to sleep. And if solo piano puts you to sleep, then the low-key compositions on George Winston’s iconic 1982 LP, December, is definitely going to equal naptime. But Winston’s no one-trick pony, nor is he—as he is often tagged—a New Age artist. He’s a slightly indulgent piano whiz who has, in recent years, dabbled in everything from the Doors to ragtime to Peanuts theme songs. In fact, he’s done two discs of Vince Guaraldi’s classic Peanuts tunes—the most recent being this year’s Love Will Come: The Music of Vince Guaraldi, Volume 2—making him a hero to cartoon geeks like myself. [ROCK CANDY] Hot off a debut record, Muscle Memories, that’s still rightly steaming, Portland duo Mnemonic Sounds has turned buzz into real energy. On the album, Megan Ouchida and Peter Suk play a fetching game of vocal tag as ruminative synths and dancey drum work round out a series of fully formed songs. And while the group’s lounge-minded sound can be as peaceful as a trumpeter swan in winter, it’s not afraid to draw an edgier sword and cut up some of the glamour with a runaway electric guitar or off-tempo bass line.  Sometimes beauty is prettier with a little rabble rousing. [WORLD FUNK] Daptone Records is that rare contemporary label that stands for something: In this case, timeless recordings and lots of brass. For its flagship act, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, that means Motown-era soul faithfully reproduced right down to the sweaty guys in suits. For Budos Band, it means gorgeous funk and soul with deep roots in Nigeria and Ethiopia. It is, as one would expect from the Daptone imprint, recorded with era-appropriate ’70s keyboards and a nerdy TLC that oozes timeless style. The band’s three records have gone from well-played tribute fare to a more original mix of styles, with Budos Band III easily ranking as the Staten Island outfit’s finest offering to date. But it’s one thing to hear the records and another treat entirely to get to hear this music—a true labor of love—in person. [PERFECT SOUND FOREVER] If you’re still on the fence about seeing Pavement play the lone Portland stop of what is likely its only reunion tour, then let me say this: if Stephen Malkmus can make me cry, then he’ll likely do the same thing for you. I’m notorious for playing it close to the vest when it comes to feelings, but the minute Pavement—in my mind the best band of the ’90s and the unquestioned prankster kings of inde rock—played “Grounded” during May’s Sasquatch! Festival, the tears just started flowing, and I’m not afraid to admit it. So yeah, maybe Pavement isn’t the best live band on the planet, and maybe its sets are often a little wild and uneven. But with a back catalog of transcendent material (this tour mostly sticks to the “hits” featured on 2010 best-of Quarantine the Past), there’s bound to be something that really moves you.
