Now in its 9th year, MFNW is a great opportunity for Portland bands to share stages with national and international acts and this year, MFNW really does have something for everyone.

With over 200 artists performing at more than a dozen venues, they don’t make it easy for you to decide what to attend. Take for example Friday of the festival, where this year you have your choice between legends. Who’s it gonna be? The hugely influential Bad Brains? Or one of the first performances in a decade by the original Sunny Day Real Estate lineup ? Tough one, right? But you’re bound to walk away with memories no matter what decision you make.

On this podcast you’ll hear everything from the knock down drag out punk rock of Defect Defect and the synth synth of Atole to the always compelling Scout Niblett and the ever-charming Ah Holly Fam’ly. There are also some special surprises along the way. Pace yourselves. Brace yourselves. See you this weekend.

PDX Pop Now!. Manor of Art. SMMR BMMR. It’s no wonder every weekend in Portland feels like a festival. This edition of These Are The Days features a few artists performing at festivals taking place in the waning days of summer, including White Hinterland (Mikrofest on September 5), and Quasi (TBA festival on September 12). Also celebrated on this podcast are new releases by May Ling, Ramona Falls and the Woolen Men, plus the shoegaze of Happy Prescriptions, the ska of Target For Tomorrow and the Sunday morning coming down folk of the Sarcastic Dharma Society. The next few weeks should keep us all pretty well tided over right up until MusicFest NW. Pace yourselves.

For six years, the free, three day, all-ages music festival has featured prime Portland talent, both established and up and coming, and the lineups have simply gotten better with every passing year. This podcast highlights artists I’m most excited about at this year’s festival, ranging from new favorites Deelay Ceelay and Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside to old friends the Shaky Hands and the Estranged, as well artists I’ll be seeing at the festival for the first time like (gasp!) the Minus 5 and Pierced Arrows. Wow. See you at the festival!

Busy week. But here it is, Portland Makes Music number 7. This edition of our monthly show did things a little differently. We held the show at Backspace, and cut out the Q&A session which normally precedes each act. Instead, we brought in 11 acts, each of them covering a Michael Jackson tune. The results were, I think, pretty brilliant. From Jack Lewis’ vocoder-tinged, casio-fueled cover of “They Don’t Really Care About Us” to the Dirty Mittens startlingly faithful version of “Rock With You” (a crowd pleaser, for sure) and Typhoon’s grungey finale of “Billie Jean.” I feel bad mentioning specific examples, because the whole thing is great (wait til you hear the loop-pedal breakdown on Grey Anne’s rendition of “Leave Me Alone”!). We had a ton of fun, the place was packed (we had to turn people away!), and there were some adorable dancing children hanging out during the afterparty. Our sound guy, Abe, did an amazing job, though he let us know that he felt bad about the fuzzy microphone connection on a batch of tunes beginning, I believe, with Gabe Hascall’s cover of “Ben.” A special thanks to all the performers, which are, in order of appearance, listed below the file. It’s all one big mp3, so dig in!

Oh my, this should have gone up weeks ago!
The June 7 installment of Portland Makes Music featured Portland pop trio Lovers playing a special acoustic set and longtime Portland (recently relocated back East; we’ll miss ya, Mike!) songwriter Michael Johnson/Reclinerland. Both were really, really fun and sweet and it was one of my all-time favorite shows we’ve ever put on. But don’t take my word for it…

The podcast features interviews with Seth Kaufman, the PDX Pop Now! board member in charge of coordinating the compilation of this year’s CD, and Aaron and Sean, the heads of a new record label called Palatial Crest. You might recognize Aaron’s voice as being that of the artist Gejius, who has a track featured on the PDX Pop Now! 2009 compilation.

On June 4 at an all ages show at Holocene, PDX Pop Now! celebrates the release of its 2009 compilation of local music. PDX Pop Now!, a great bastion of support for local creativity, is now in its 6th year.

On June 6 at the Artistery, the launch of Palatial Crest will be celebrated with performances by the label’s roster, which is currently Gejius, Very International Love and Moustache & Game Show

When the history of 2009 is written perhaps the most important part of its story will be that this has been a year for people to seek creative control. Indeed, these are the days for people to create something where they will have valid input over their own destiny.

On this edition of These Are The Days, music by New Century School Book, one of Willamette Week’s best new bands, Nurses, the Rainy States’ recent single “New Castle,” and a band still proudly wearing that new band smell, Wilson High School’s Starparty. There’s also an interview with local producer Shay Scott, responsible for twiddling some knobs during the process for new tracks from Paper Brain and Ross McLeron. Also featuring standout tracks from standbys Deer Or the Doe, the Metal Shakespeare Company, and Taxpayers, this podcast reflects that old familiar adage we should all take to heart: make new friends but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold.

Here we are in Spring, a time of renewal and change and our Portland music scene is in full bloom too. On this podcast you can hear brand new music from old favorites Cower and Starfucker, and a special live recording from Patterns, all bands who have changed lineups over time. You’ll also hear exciting tracks from up and comers the Shivas and Midnight Callers, two young bands produced by Pat Kearns of Blue Skies For Black Hearts. Kearns has been responsible for producing some of Portland’s most enjoyable albums over the last few years. On this edition of These Are The Days, listen in as we chat with Kearns about his experiences as a producer, and other memories, as well as what he’s looking forward to in the future. It’s the Spring season, and we’re in the springtime of our lives. These really are the days.
