New Pierced Arrows Record in 2010

Fred and Toody Cole have been making music together for a long time. The legendary Oregon couple are the linchpin of Portland’s punk scene: since first appearing in the early ’80s, the pair has released a staggering 17 albums, mostly behind the name of their old band, Dead Moon. One of Portland’s most revered outfits, [...]
Get to Know Yr (Local) Label

Quick question: Do you know what local label is releasing the new World’s Greatest Ghosts album? Have you ever wanted to meet some of the peeps behind K Records? Want to nab a copy of the brand new Horse Feathers 7-inch? If you answered yes to at least one of these questions, then it’s likely [...]
White Rainbow Hits the Parking Lot

If you’ve ever watched a taped interview (or, hell, been involved with one) with a musician you know that it’s usually not the most interesting thing to watch. Print journalists—and, um, music critics—rarely look like they’re comfortable in front of a camera, and are often are talking to someone that they just met a few [...]
UPDATED! Introducing PYRAMID (the Band Formerly Known as Starfucker)

Update 2: We’re wrong, according to a PYRAMID publicist. “The band has NOT signed with the Rough Trade the label. The stores are simply stocking the 7″ as an exclusive deluxe version. Rough Trade shops are separately owned and controlled. “Medicine”is coming out as a self release by the band’s own imprint, DDD.”

PDX Fest Proves That Jazz Is Not Dead

In an era where music blogging often amounts to the use of ALL CAPS, quibbling about numerical ratings (does the new Grizzly Bear song deserve an 8.2 or an 8.7?), and naming your favorite chillwave band, it can be hard to get excited about a jazz festival. That is until you see that the lineup [...]
Modest Mouse Debuts Trippy Video for “Whale Song”

Isaac Brock and his band Modest Mouse have never been shy in front of a camera. Though Brock’s steely glare—described to perfection by LocalCut’s Casey Jarman just a few weeks ago—is often cold and intimidating, it makes for great fodder for a music video. And while the Mouse have released some fine videos this decade [...]
Horse Feathers Release New 7-Inch, Play Shows with the Oregon Ballet Theater

It’s crazy to think about, but the year is almost over. Maybe I’m just behind schedule (or emails) but when we got word today that acoustic quartet Horse Feathers—who released the lovely House With No Home last year—have a brand new 7-inch coming out on on October 27 on Kill Rock Stars, my first thought [...]
MFNW Diaries: Friday

What more can we say? Who needs much of an intro when you’ve got 5,000 words on day 3 of MFNW, complete with Sunny Day Real Estate, Bad Brains, the LC showcase and drunken antics at the afterparty. Contributors include Mark Stock, Matthew Singer, Jenny Booth, Aaron Mesh, Kelly Clarke, AP Kryza, David Robinson, Devan [...]
Loch Lomond Gets Fancy at the Ace Hotel
0 CommentsPosted on Thursday, September 17th, 2009
Behind all its ornate instrumentation and chamber arrangements, Loch Lomond is a pop band. You could always hear it in spots—the gentle chug of “Field Report,” the plucked strings and gallop of “Blue Lead Fences”—but never before has the six piece band been in full pop mode. Until now.
In the 26th (!) edition of [...]
The Flaming Lips Shooting Naked Bike Video in Portland
2 CommentsPosted on Thursday, September 17th, 2009
The rumor is out! I heard rumblings around our office last week that the Flaming Lips—probably the weirdest rock band to ever have a street named after it—were set to film a video sometime this month in Portland. The details have emerged at BikePortland.org, of all places, and it’s actually even more strange than you [...]
