Local organic catering company Phresh debuted its lunchbox delivery service four weeks ago with sandwich and salad options for office noshing. We tried the beef brisket sandwich lunchbox ($9.75 per person) to see if it’s worth canceling your company’s Quizno account.
The biodegradable, corn-based lunchbox comes packed with a sandwich, bag of Kettle Chips and chocolate chip cookie. Sandwich options range from the standard (turkey and cheese) to the unexpected (Phresh’s take on the Vietnamese sub). Our beef brisket sandwich was made of Cascade Farms natural beef, white cheddar, caramelized onions and a sundried tomato-horseradish aioli. The tender brisket was top-notch. Intern Bradley Campbell remarked, “It’s almost like biting into a live animal, it’s that fresh.” The aioli was flavorful, though its heavy application muted the sharpness of the cheddar. The Grand Central roll, flavorful and just chewy enough, was the perfect thing to hold it all together. The accompanying Kettle Chips were a nice change from Lays, and the small chocolate chip cookie was chewy and bursting with chocolate chips.
Ten dollars seems a little steep for a sandwich lunch, but it’s kind of cool that you can contribute to sustainable farming and the local economy by feeding a bunch of suits at a corporate meeting. Phresh chef Rob Leon, formerly of Saucebox and Atwaters, personally delivers orders to downtown clients, and seems to get a kick out of the simple pleasures of a boxed lunch. “It’s been exciting,” he says. “I like making sandwiches. And it’s a great excuse to bake chocolate chip cookies all the time.”
