Put Dwight in, Coach, He’s Ready to Play (or at least Broadcast)

Here are six things that listeners of last night’s Portland Beavers radio broadcast learned about Portland Tribune executive editor Dwight Jaynes, who did a guest spot for all nine innings with the always-professional voice of the Beavers, Rich Burk.

1) Jaynes says he doesn’t have as much time as executive editor of the twice-a-week paper as he’d like to devote to his sports column.

2) On cool nights like last night, Jaynes is baffled when pitchers fail to protect their arms by wearing long-sleeved jerseys.

3) He’s an old catcher who will play this summer in a 38-and-over league.

4) Like the old baseball ad campaign, Jaynes says he “digs the long ball.”

5) Asked by Burk if the Trib would ever compete on a daily basis with The Oregonian, Jaynes replied, “Not in the near future … We’re not ready. We may grow into that some point.”

6) If this Tribune thing doesn’t works out, Jaynes could always find a home in baseball. He knows the game, and even did a passable turn as a play-by-play guy.

And here’s one final thing I learned while listening to the Beavers’ 6-5 win: I’m envious as hell he got to broadcast a baseball game with Burk. Maybe WW’s softball team will let me live-blog this summer.

  1. Daaaaave says:

Jaynes writes new columns? I thought he just had a Madlibs sheet of tired cliches and bitches about MLB slubs that one of the other sports writers filled in for him. Jaynes exists to make Canzano seem thoughtful and articulate.

Plus his Trib picture makes him look like he has hydrocephalus.

  2. 107 or Bust says:

Tight Jeans scares me and a real sports guy reports on sports, not just the one he likes, unlike this guy.

  3. Brother Al says:

Hank — My thoughts in response to some of the six things you listed above:
    2) When I was a pitcher (Little League, Babe Ruth), I didn’t like the restricted feeling a long sleeved jersey gave me. My career or talent hardly compares to that of someone playing professional baseball at the Triple-A level, but that may be a reason Jaynes sees short-sleeved pitchers, even on cold nights.
    3) I’m an old catcher, too. That was my favorite position. How do I find out about this 38-and-over league?
    4) The long ball’s cool. But I love to see those runs scored on walks, singles and base stealing.

    Thanks for the article.
