
We screwed up! In today’s Scoop about missing merchandise at Portland performances of Monty Python’s Spamalot, we wrote,
“Those of you hoping to pick up a can of collector’s-edition Golden Honey Grail Spam at the Broadway cash cow Monty Python’s Spamalot this week at Keller Auditorium will have to do without. Although the touring production posted want ads on Craigslist for “bunny slipper models” to sell CDs, shirts and other Python merch at an on-site booth, Portland Opera spokeswoman Julia Sheridan tells Scoop the merch crew “couldn’t come to terms with PCPA’s fees.” According to a source close to the production, the Spam folks waited until opening night to tell the Portland Center for Performing Arts they would only hand over a measly 10 percent of sales . That’s 5 percent less than PCPA’s usual 15 percent cut, so the merch crew was promptly thrown out on their ears —their big, fluffy ears.”
The Portland Opera has reminded us that they don’t get a dime from merchandise sales, and the Spammers’ disagreement was entirely with Portland Center for Performing Arts, which oversees Keller Auditorium. We sincerely regret the error.

The Spamalot merchandisers were offered 10% on CD’s and our usual percentage on everything else. With no sales tax they are actually paying less than 10% here in Oregon-compared to venues in other states. It is our opinion they need to leave a little of that money here in the local market. We were sorry they chose not to sell. Like many of the patrons attending the show, I was hoping for a pair of fuzzy bunny ears myself. That’s show biz.
