The blog More Hockey Less War provides interesting analysis this week of Portland Public Schools’ open transfer policy, which (to put it nicely) shifts students and money unevenly across the district.

The topic, along with the school district’s teacher transfer policy, will be a hot issue this coming school year. Newly elected school-board member Ruth Adkins says the board will consider the policy “shortly.”

The red areas on the map (at left) represent the parts of the district bleeding students and money. (They’re the Monica Lewinskys of PPS). The green portion includes schools that gained students and money.

A Monica Lewinsky joke. In 2007. Way to keep those pop culture references bout as fresh as a Foghat concert!

  2. megs says:

It would be interesting to know what impact NCLB has had on the transfers out of the red zones.

  3. Himself says:

There’s going to be a Foghat concert?!?

  4. JustMe says:

Looking at the map, these green areas also happen to be the most unaffordable parts of Portland.

  5. Kari CHisholm says:

I’m not even sure I get the Monica Lewinsky joke here. She was a giver, not a taker? She bleeds students and money? Seriously, this doesn’t make any barking sense…

  6. Jeff Taylor says:

Foghat: a much better name than Portland Public Schools. And if Portland were the first to create a Monica Lewinsky Middle School, donations would pour in from around the country. We Boomers have not forgotten Monica. Her contribution to American history helped make us what we are today, as a nation.

Thanks, Beth, for the heads-up on the transfer policy. Not sure I get the Monica Lewinsky reference, either. But it’s wise to keep her in mind. Bet she pops up in the news soon, between now and election time.

  7. Beth Slovic says:

Ok, ok, I took a joke too far. It makes sense in the headline, I swear. But if you need an explanation, I’m afraid you’re on your own.

  8. Himself says:

I’m still trying to figure out when and where Foghat’s playin’.

  9. Jeff Taylor says:

Portland Public Schools is a messed-up crew/bureauc-rats are jumpin’ ship, and students are, too/Vicki took the money ’cause she’s nobody’s fool/ "I did not have no fornication/Barely got an education/With that skool."
    –Foghat’s unreleased "Puddletown K-Rap-12".

  10. Himself says:

I’ve done a new map organized by cluster you all may be interested in.

Um. Some might consider me a prude, but *I* got the Monica Lewinsky joke!
