coverstory

Portland Peak Oil activist Randy White says he will join the increasingly crowded race for Sam Adams’ city council seat.
Willamette Week profiled White, 31, last year. (See “My Name Is Randy And I’m Addicted To Oil,” WW Feb. 22, 2006.) Last month he quit his job with Portland’s Air America affiliate, KPOJ, to start a green marketing business.
Now he plans to throw himself into politics, gathering the necessary 1,000 signatures and $5 contributions to qualify for Portland’s public campaign financing system.
“I kinda made the decision without telling my wife,” White says. “She’s so pissed off at me!”
White will be positioning himself as the sustainability candidate. “Go Randy Leonard for getting [biodiesel programs] installed, but we can go way farther, way faster,” he says.
He joins a growing list of activists and up-and-comers who hope to take the seat that will be vacated by Adams, who is running for mayor. The candidates who’ve filed so far are Jeff Bissonnette of the Citizens’ Utilities Board, Portland Public Schools development chief John Branam, Duck Tours founder Charles Lewis, streetcar advocate Chris Smith and 2006 council candidate and blogger Amanda Fritz.

  1. Randy White says:

As a candidate working for rapid business evolution through sustainable change, I understand a ‘green’ platform is merely one issue for filling Sam Adams’ shoes.

I have lived in Portland for five years and have a strong ability to create new markets for economic growth – which my wife certainly supports!

I look forward to organizing the campaign for a proper launch soon.

Remember Randy, a garden and a goat! Maybe a sheep and some chickens.

Where do I send my five bucks?

  6. Aunt Cin says:

I’m sure your wife supports you as much as the rest of us. Probably more. Expect great things. They’d be fortunate to have you, Randy-man.
