WW has learned the identities of the final three candidates for a federal judge’s seat in Portland. And U.S. Attorney Karin Immergut (pictured above) is not one of them.
Two sources close to the selection process say a WW story published last week was fatal to Immergut’s chances. Oregon’s top federal prosecutor, Immergut was widely believed to be the favorite candidate of U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Ore.).
In the end, there was consensus among the six members of a selection committee not to choose Immergut. Four members of the committee were chosen by Smith and two by U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.).
“Political considerations were part of the mix,” a member of the selection committee told WW about the three candidates who were chosen. “You can drawn your own conclusions on that. That’s not a very hard dotted line to draw.”
Immergut declined to comment when reached this afternoon by phone.
Last week’s WW story pointed out that an appointment of Immergut would face an uphill battle in Congress because of political baggage she carries, including her history working for Special Prosecutor Ken Starr’s investigation of President Clinton in 1998.
Instead, the committee forwarded three other names to the Bush administration, which will choose a nominee. They are:

Let us consider who is the most insulated from the people, especially when we consider federal appointment, and NOT vote for them.
Vote for the candidate who’se social background encompasses the constituents of the 99% of the people who work their A#@$’s off to make it one day at a time.
Do not vote for the candidate who has been groomed for appointment.
Let us make it loud and clear the we the people can make change without political/corporate interference.
