Mayor Tom Potter will formally endorse Sho Dozono for mayor this morning.

This was a matter of “when,” not “if.”
Potter and Dozono are buddies. The mayor’s wife, Karin Hansen, has already been volunteering for Dozono. And Potter’s mutual distaste for the mayoral front-runner, Commissioner Sam Adams, is taken for granted within City Hall.
Here’s the Dozono campaign’s press release:

MAYOR TOM POTTER IS READY TO ENDORSE
Portland-
Who: Mayor Tom Potter and community leader Sho Dozono.
What: Mayor Tom Potter will announce his endorsement of Sho Dozono for Mayor of City of Portland.
Where: South Park Blocks, Shemanski Fountain, on Park Avenue between Salmon and Main Street.

Mayor Tom Potter and Sho Dozono will be available immediately following for questions.

Updated 12 p.m. by Shefali Kulkarni: “I’m here to endorse Sho because he is a proven leader, a successful businessman and a guy who just loves Portland,” Potter said this morning. He read off a resume-like list of Dozono’s accomplishments, including his teaching career at Grant High School.

“Sho has moved mountains,” Potter said. “He’s a quiet man who does not give in to bragging. Portland needs Sho. Get to know Sho.”

Dozono said he was humbled by Potter’s endorsement and would use the mayor’s support to gain the confidence of voters. Dozono says this election should be treated with the same urgency as the presidential race. “This election will be over in 60 days, I believe. I need the 50 percent plus one vote,” Dozono said.

Potter wouldn’t answer a reporter’s questions about his reluctance to endorse Commissioner Sam Adams. “I’m not here to bash anyone right now,” Potter said.

Potter said Dozono has the “right kind of values and is the right kind of person for the job.”

Dozono campaign manager Amie Abbott said that the Mayor has already been advising Dozono on his campaign. Dozono said he knew Potter was planning on endorsing him, but couldn’t make it official until he was certified as a publicly financed candidate—which Auditor Gary Blackmer did yesterday.

  1. Thank goodness for non-politicians says:

as Corey put it, I’m glad neither Mayor Potter or Sho are considered "politicians." I’m all for the non-career politician who runs because they love Portland.

Congratulations to Sho for his certification and for being a candidate who doesn’t need to run for their career (that would be Sam Adams’ profile).

Sho doesn’t need this job, but he wants to serve the citizens of Portland and Portlanders have shown that they want a leader who brings fresh perspective.

Sho, I’ve been hearing from many people I know that they want to meet you, and that they’re excited to hear of Mayor Potter’s endorsement of you.

It means a lot to be endorsed by the current Mayor,.
