Rolling out at high noon May 3, the Ninth Annual Million Marijuana March smoked through downtown Portland as part of Oregon NORML’s protest of pot prohibition and to support the use of medicinal marijuana through Oregon’s sometimes controversial Medical Marijuana Act.
Cops gathered on Broadway. Lights were flashing. Signs were waving. A cool drizzle was settling in.
“Relax it and tax it,” the crowd chanted.
“God made marijuana, man made beer,” some exclaimed—though it wasn’t clear which one was supposed to be better.
A hazy tension filled the air.
After a set from Las Vegas act Los Marijuanos, part of a self-described new breed of “Mexican pro pot poet,” an estimated 700 marchers hovered around the pre-ordained route and back to Pioneer Courthouse Square—with their police escort, of course. Portland’s march was one of more than 200 held May 3 in cities around the world.
Supporters young and old; punks, parents and grannies, hip-hoppers and hippies, wheelchair bound and on crutches, all turned up to carry on the fight for their cause.
Super heroine Ganja Girl flew in to add some green-goddess power, while crowds of tie-dye-clad groovers looked on in awe.
“These guys are easy compared to the anarchists,” said Sgt. Voepel of the Portland Police Department, “they’re on time, and they’re orderly.”
According to the Sarge, the only rabble rousers during the march were two drunkards who were pestering people but were unconnected to the peaceful pro-pot gatherers. No pot smokers were spotted.
Not to be forgotten, soul savers armed with Chik-Tracts were fixated on all four corners of the Square to help out with the deviants coming from inside.
“We’re here once a month spreading the word,” said Pastor Raymond of Living Word Baptist Church in Salmon Creek, Washington, “we just got lucky today.”

This is not the first time Pastor Raymond was present and preaching the gospel. Strange that a Baptist Pastor would say it was luck. Next year we will provide more biblical information in support of marijuana. I’m sure we will see Pastor Raymond next year as well.
In a nation were one can walk in a store show ID and purchase 151 proof bottle of booze ,it make no sense one cant buy legal Marijuana?
Marijuana was the gateway drug 35 years ago, and it still is today. Stronger than espresso laced with pure sugarcane, and still sucking out brain cells after all these years. Today’s pot is 10x more potent than in the ’70’s. Would you want to be the passenger in a car with a dazed and confused pot smoker? No way. Been there, done that, woke up and smelled the coffee.
Hold on a second. Would you want to be a passenger to anyone under the influence of alcohol (the socially accepted/legal drug)? Legalizing Pot does not condone driving under the influence. Just like Alcoholism doesnt justify child molestation, rape, assault …etc. Shopping is the gateway drug to addiction. Think about that.
And the lies continue. It is as much a "gateway drug" as cigarettes. Let me see, "87% of heroine users started with cigarettes". Now cigarettes are a gateway drug too. Wait, a better one. "99.9% of crack users started by drinking water." Now water is a gateway drug. Think for yourself Kyla, and others. The wool has been drawn over your eyes.
