‘Commies’ Threaten B.C. With Intelligent Environmental Policy—Could We Be Next?

reddawn_120704British Columbia’s “carbon tax”—a scheme that jacks up the cost of fossil fuels while cutting income and business taxes—takes effect today.
Back in April, we included that B.C. carbon tax on a list of “green” ideas that Oregon ought to steal.
The B.C. plan also included a $100 “climate action dividend” mailed to every British Columbian last month. The CBC quotes one resident complaining that his carbon kicker is being consumed by higher gas prices.
The Canuck provincial government may be more ambitious than the Kulongoski administration when it comes to environmental policy, but it faces the same sort of batshit-crazy “criticism.”
“Carbon tax, carbon smax,” writes one commenter on the CBC site. “Sounds more like redistribution of wealth – communism not far behind.” (Emphasis added.)
Right…because communism is really popular these days.
First it’s the carbon tax, then it’s the invading armies of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. Look out!

  1. Bob Clark says:

The high price of gasoline is taxing enough without piling another government tax on top of it. Besides, there is no proof anthropogenic caused carbon dioxide emissions are actually causing a significant amount of the global warming. And for Portlanders like myself, I should be so lucky Portland climate becomes a bit warmer. I spend most of the year in multiple layers trying to fight the cold, damp climate. There are actually just as many scientists who disagree with anthropogenic-carbon dioxide driven global warming as those that agree. It’s hardly a consensus, and is nowhere near proof. It’s been pretty financially rewarding for fat boy Al Gore, though.

    "batshit-crazy"

Sounds like a perfect description of BC’s carbon tax.

One more thing, this is not a "news" article as the breadcrumbs imply, it is an opinion piece. Mr. Pein and his editor are obviously graduates of the close cover before striking school of journalism.

  4. REL says:

I love the weather here, and I don’t need it any warmer. Most likely, if you’re bundling up that much, you weren’t born here and you’re not acclimated. Feel free to acclimate somewhere else.

Lets assume that the consensus (that you don’t want to believe) is wrong, and that we are not contributing significantly to global warming, what would be the downside to driving less and cleaning up the air more? Well?
