Who is Paul Stewart, and did Portland police officer Officer Stephanie Rabey screw up when she shot him? That, of course depends on whose version of events you believe.

The title of the 1950 Japanese movie Rashomon is shorthand for people staking out wildly divergent accounts of the same event.

Readers get two pretty interesting but very different versions of the Stewart shooting—one from The Portland Mercury’s blog from a couple of weeks ago and one in today’s Oregonian.

Which one sounds right, or—if Rashomon is your guide—are they both right?
