Since its inception in 2005, I’ve been lucky enough to emcee Portland’s Fashion Design Camp’s big finale: The Fashion Show.
Last Friday, I had a chance to do it again.
The fashionable fete is the culmination of a week’s worth of work in which a very young group of future fashion designers immerse themselves in a world full of rick-rack, tulle and fancy ribbon.
After whipping up outfits of their very own creation, the girls show it all off for their parents and friends at the big show. But what was different about this year’s camp from previous years was the sheer number of participants: over 40 young girls.
Due to its increase in size, the FDC finale was held at a real, live venue—Southeast’s Melody Ballroom. And unlike previous incarnations, this year’s show included real, live designs from this city’s top fashion superstars (including Madelene, Elizabeth Dye, Luxury Jones, Frocky Jack Morgan, Kate Towers and Holly Stalder, Elizabeth Rohloff, and Sarah Seven) on real, live, adult-sized models.
With some of the pint-sized designers running late the whole thing felt like a real, live fashion show—almost too much. After tending to blisters on feet that rarely, if ever, have seen a high heel, asking a couple of volunteers to keep their swear words to a minimum, and trying to figure out how I was going to keep all the “Hannahs” straight without a practice run-thru, the whole show went off without a hitch—even if it did start nearly 45 minutes late.
Oh, well—I guess that’s fashion.
