In a small office building on the corner of Northeast Killingsworth Street, City Council hopeful Charles Lewis and about 25 of his supporters, family and friends were all smiles despite his crushing defeat by Amanda Fritz.
Over tunes blaring from a live local reggae band, Lewis chatted with backers while others exchanged high fives and hugs.
Needless to say, the jovial atmosphere wasn’t a result of Lewis’ race against Fritz. Rather, Sen. John McCain had just delivered his concession speech and the Barack Obama cake on the potluck table was about to be cut.
“I’m ecstatic!” Lewis said of the Obama victory.
As for his own campaign, Lewis said he was happy with his race overall and the way his campaign focused on positivity.
“We really ran an uplifting, positive campaign,” Lewis said, adding that since it was his first time running for Portland City Council, he knew the deck was stacked against him.
“Most candidates don’t get elected their first time,” Lewis said. “We knew we were going to have an uphill battle.”
And what about another run at a City Council seat?
“Maybe,” Lewis said.
