That’s exactly what The Times needs: More folks whose positions in the paper are determined by genetics instead of talent. Has definitely done wonders for Newhouse/Advance, another imbred organization.
Garbanzo, that seems like a cheap shot (and I’m going to resist the urge to return the volley by commenting on "imbred"). Having had the pleasure of working at The New York Times, I can assure you that genetics never interfered with the effort to publish a great newspaper every single day. And I’m willing to bet that Sulzberger knows that no matter who his daddy is, he’s going to have to earn his right to be there. Before you go knocking the nearly dead era of the family-owned newspaper, take a look at the LA Times.
Good luck! I hope the young Sulzberger has great insights and business acumen and is able to abate a sell out or avarice take over.
Having worked with Arthur in Rhode Island, I can assure you that, if true, this would be no nepotism hire. Besides being a fine writer he’s got the uncoachable gift of news judgment: identifying thee most important issues and players on a beat, and holding those players accountable. This actually would be a well-earned promotion.
Having written extensively about the Grahams of the Washington Post and the Newhouses, my advice is to bring some of the daughters into the mix–especially at the NYT. You mention he’s Sulzberger’s only son. I remember that "Pinch" said on taking the job from his father ("Punch"), i want to leave my son a better paper than the one i took over; he was reminded by female reporters that he also has a daughter. The NYT has kept the paper in male hands for generations and the results have not always been pretty. Bring on the sisters!
Why does WW feel the need to report on every little thing that goes on at the O? It comes across as very teen girl gossip spreading as opposed to news reporting. I know the O and the Trib occassionally report on the comings and goings at other types of media outlets (tv and radio) but I can’t recall either of them ever reporting the latest casualties at their direct competition.
Yes, he’ll be missed. It’s very hard to find local reporters so good at providing no balance in their reporting and deciding what the story will be prior to doing any research. Or so adept at carrying out hatchet jobs under the guise of presenting information.
Pretty sure those editors at the O will be glad not to have any more double-standards for your normal 26 year-old reporters who get editorial license and little supervision in their reporting.
Really useful list. You mention he’s Sulzberger’s only son. I remember that "Pinch" said on taking the job from his father ("Punch"), i want to leave my son a better paper than the one i took over; he was reminded by female reporters that he also has a daughter.
Sulzberger to Leave The Oregonian, It was a very informative. Even if he was interested, he lacked enough seniority to apply.
Interesting..
Good luck! I hope the young Sulzberger has great insights and business acumen and is able to abate a sell out or avarice take over.
