As compliments go, this is a biggie.

Alice Waters, she of the farm-to-table movement and Chez Panisse fame, has chosen a wine from Beaverton’s Ponzi Vineyard to be poured at a big, $500-a-plate inauguration dinner in Washington DC next Monday night. No, Obama won’t be there to take a sip. But according to Ponzi, the guest list will include a bunch of influential DC types; chefs including Waters, Danny Meyers and Rick Bayless as well as Anthony Bourdain; and This American Life’s Ira Glass.

The wine Waters chose, Ponzi’s Arneis, is a dry white wine made from a grape rarely planted in the United States. The Ponzis are only one of three vineyards that grow the grapes in the country.

Here’s some happy gushing from Maria Ponzi Fogelstrom, the company’s sales maestro:

This is an incredible honor for our family, as we are all huge Obama fans.
Alice Waters has claimed Ponzi Arneis as one of her most cherished wines. It must be true! What a thrill to have our wine enjoyed at such a memorable time in our country’s history.

Proceeds from the dinner will benefit D.C. area food charities like DC Central Kitchen,
Martha’s Table and FreshFarm Markets.

Gotta say, this news finds Ponzi rubbing elbows with much classier neighbors than theĀ last time Willamette Week talked to the winery.
