Mayor Sam Adams told WW about 3:45 pm today that he is close to making a decision about whether he will resign or fight to keep his office.

Adams is meeting individually with city commissioners tomorrow morning.

“I’m not going to keep people waiting much longer,” Adams told WW. “I need to make a good decision and make it soon.”

Adams, who has not been back to City Hall since a Tuesday press conference, said this afternoon that he is still talking to people about what he should do. One person he’s not in touch with is Beau Breedlove, the now-21-year-old former legislative intern with whom Adams admitted a 2005 sexual relationship earlier this week.

“I’m not allowed to talk to Beau while this matter is under investigation,” Adams says.

On Wednesday, Attorney General John Kroger announced he would investigate the circumstances surrounding Adams’ sexual relationship with Breedlove, in response to requests from Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schrunk, Portland Police Chief Rosie Sizer and a majority of the City Council.

Adams told WW this afternoon he has retained criminal lawyer Bob Weaver to represent him in that probe.

“Regardless of what happens,” Adams says, “I look forward to the investigation.”

  1. hank says:

I hope the city isnt planning on paying him for this week. The guy hasnt left his house in 3 days.

  2. Scott says:

This smug SOB needs to get out of our city hall. His behavior was lecherous and deceitful. I’m embarrased to be a Portlander!

  3. Sioen says:

I’m embarrassed by the sex hysteria going on in Portland. If this had been a straight man, no one would have asked any questions in 2007.

Police officers have engaged in similar consensual relationships and been disciplined — but not fired.

    Why the double standard?

    • dja says:

I really don’t get why this is so hard to understand – it’s not about what he did, it’s the cover up. The lying, coercing others to lie, giving jobs to people to keep quiet – Sam Adams did those things – that’s why he must resign.

  4. Beau Pounds Sam Adams like water says:

I’ve already bet $10 that he’s going to pull a Blagojevich: hunker down, hire a raft of attorneys, say he needs to stay in office for the good of the people, and blame it all on his political adversaries.

  5. Jack Peek says:

    To PDXERS:

Having tried to recall SAM’S godmother Vera Katz, I learned the hard way, how low down in political fighting you can go.

There and then, I vowed to understand how the game was played.

The law that says you cannot recall someone for 6 months……a pile of cow sh–!

The call for an investigation by \"LOO LEONARD,\" A SCAM designed to throw water on your fires to burn ADAMS out of office via him resigning.

Leonard wins both ways…the really far left, would fall down to have a \"tough guy\" take charge(better ask how many early retirements in fire an police that would bring)

Worse…all the council members rushing to defend him when all the polls were 5-1 or more to kick him out.

\"Who’s looking out for us?\" …NOT THE COUNCIL FOR SURE.

Burn him out with emails and phone calls.

I’m telling you all, miss this chance to send a message to all local and county types…you better move, if you don’t get him now, you don’t shoot an arrow at a raging bear, you kill the bear, with one shot from a cannon or rifle that will end this once and for all."

  6. Sam should Go says:

The difference Scion is that he makes the rules and he can’t seem to live by them. Sam should go! Nobody will ever believe him again.

  7. Sam should Go says:

The difference Scion is that he makes the rules and he can’t seem to live by them. Sam should go! Nobody will ever believe him again.

  8. Noble says:

I’m embarrassed for Portland, too. You’d think that a school of sharks had smelled blood the way all these people are working themselves into a frenzy over this.

  9. THBerry says:

Wow! Jack Peek and his minions sure have themselves worked up over nothing again. The schoolyard bullies seldom grow up. Mr. Peek confirms this for us all.

  10. Paul Smith says:

Sam Should Go – Sam does not make the rules; the City Council makes the rules. Portland’s mayor has very little direct power over how and when Portland spends our money.

  11. anonymous says:

There’s a very simple test to help Sam make his decision: Would he retain a staffer who had made a similar "error in judgement?" If no, then Sam should resign.

If Sam says he would retain somebody after they made a mistake, I’d like to talk to him and remind him of his own history.

  12. Jeff says:

Has Portland gone insane? I can’t believe that sam adams resigning/being recalled could even be an issue over a matter as trivial as this. Is this really worth paralyzing our city government and dealing with the expense of a recall/investigation? Please stop the insanity and focus on solving the city’s school/environmental/homeless/sewer/etc. Please?

    • Stay says:

I 110% agree. I think the economic decline has left too many people with nothing better to do than to conduct this ridiculous witch hunt. We need leadership, not division. Stay strong, Sam…

    • flapdaddy says:

it is unfortunate that you hold your elected officals to such a rock bottom standard. this man lied to you to get into office – and got an 18 yr old kid to lie to you as well. is that someone you trust to solve the city’s multiple problems? in a city as awesome and amazing as portland we don’t need someone w/ such a blind spot and such arrogance. did sam really believe his lie wouldn’t emerge? or that – when it did – he’d be indemnified merely by holding the office? i’m shocked by so many peoples apparent willingness to shrug it off.

    • dvd says:

Jeff exemplifies the hypocrisy of the left. If it’s one of theirs, we are supposed to "move on" If it’s a conservative, off with his head. This is not about Sam’s past achievements, nor his sexual preferences. It is about abuse of power, slander of political opponents and taking sexual advantage of a subordinate. To insinuate that Sam is irreplaceable is pathetic. The city can get back to business and will be just fine as soon as this disgrace of a mayor does the right thing and resigns.

  13. onehipdad says:

Exactly what I thought: The people who elected this guy could care less that he’s blowing or porking some kid…

  14. NickFishFan says:

It’s called karmic payback. Sam the bully gets hounded out of office for lying. During the campaign, he filed an official complaint over Sho Dozono not disclosing a poll as an in-kind contribution in order to have public financing stripped away. It was a matter of integrity, they claimed…if Dozono couldn’t be honest during the campaign, how could we trust him as mayor? Interesting that Sam didn’t see the irony in that. He holds other people to higher standards than he holds himself, and that makes him a HYPOCRITE. Any 42 year old man chasing after barely legals has major psychological problems. Sam needs to resign and see a psychologist to get to the root of his dysfunction.

    Nick Fish for Mayor.

  15. Jack Peek says:

Wow! Jack Peek and his minions sure have themselves worked up over nothing again. The schoolyard bullies seldom grow up. Mr. Peek confirms this for us all.

    THBerry, Jan 23rd

HEY THBERRY: I did try to protect kids, more then SAM did.

PS: IF YOU HAVED NO KIDS…PLEASE DON’T

    • THBerry says:

I doubt that very much. You are continuing to act like the immature bully that you have always been. Your morals make Adams look like a nun.

  16. Jack Peek says:

    DEAR THBERRY:

Can you have kids? if you can…DON’T

    • THBerry says:

Dang straight I can. I have. And I will again. This world needs more people to stand up to the immature bullies that run rampant.

  17. Trivial Pursuit says:

Jeff says this matter is trivial?? It’s about much more than the sex act itself (That’s the trivial part). It’s the sneaky cover-up behavior that seems to have followed "the act" like slime that follows the slug. Beyond the sophomoric lying to get elected, what about the questionable hiring of Amy Ruiz as his Planning and Sustainability Policy Advisor? What about those 35 applicants who also applied for that position, not realizing they didn’t have a chance in hell, no matter what their qualifications? I’m sure there were several qualified planners and accredited sustainable experts who were tossed aside the minute she forced herself onto the scene. She ensured maximum impact by hand delivering her application to the mayor’s office. Her qualifications: a degree in communications in ‘02 from Seattle University, four years as a writer at an alt-weekly in Seattle and three years as City Hall reporter for the Mercury. Let’s face it. Real sustainable expertise is critical now. If these leaders are serious about preserving our environmental and economic future, they need to continue to recruit qualified professionals who are up to the task. They do not need to recruit fools in the mix who lack the appropriate job related expertise but do have "information" on the Mayor. This ridiculous manipulation by both Adams and Ruiz puts us all at risk. Get rid of them both.

  18. Timmy says:

    Go Sam, I support you.

  19. Weasles ripped my flesh says:

It’s a classic case of "Do What I Say, Not What I Do".

Adams may try to stand on that rhetoric.
    Sauce for the goose.

However, I don’t think Sam will be able to weather the storm (of his own making).

  20. AL M says:

Oh Sam, you could not have handled this any worse than you did.

Be a man and get your ass back to work.

Your no better or no worse than anybody else.

  21. margaret says:

We just don’t need any more lying politicians. Why cover up and then lie?Don’t waste our money with a long drawn out investigation…there are plenty of bright people who can become our mayor. Sam needs to do the right thing by resigning.

  22. Laura says:

We can argue about the Mayor’s judgement. I am more concerned about ours. Puritanically rushing to judge and to punish without mercy. He understands the issues, he has been put through the ringer, give him a chance.
It is a travesty we ignore George W Bush had used alcohol and cocaine but we knew he had grown out of it…everyone of us is Sam. Give Sam a chance.

    • annie says:

Equating this to GWB’s substance abuse is truly ludicrous. Puritanically rushing to judge and judge without mercy? Please….I suggest you follow Obama’s rallying cry to all of us and go do some service. In your case, I’d suggest you go work in a gay youth teen outreach program. Your simplistic accusatory approach to those who do understand to the full extent what this horny middle aged self absorbed wanna be did to the gay youth community is beyond the pale. Broaden your scope beyond the idea of "isn’t Porland just so groovy, ya we have a gay mayor." Grow yourself, educate yourself and read something beyond "Spin" magazine!

  23. Bo says:

Politically, he is done. He has stained the gay community by reinforcing the stereotype that ay men prey on younger men. You’d expect someone of Sam’s caliber to know better. That he didn’t speaks volumes.
    He lied. Bye.

    • annie says:

Set the gay community back so far. His fan base is revealing how much they don’t understand or care about the long ongoing struggle for gay rights. It is mind boggling.

  24. dja says:

I don’t think we’re arguing judgement here, even those supporting him accknowledge his judgement was poor. I personally don’t know why there’s an argument at all. I didn’t even know Portland had a code of ethics, but we do, and he definitely violated almost every item on that code. He gave a good employment position to a completely unqualified applicant, I don’t understand how anyone can look past that. He must resign.

  25. Kenna says:

It isn’t a stereotype that this older gay man "preyed" on the teen-aged boy.
It’s something so many gay men and women do, and for gay men– a whole lot!!
We don’t need this trash for office– period.

  26. annie says:

Good! Because seriously dude, what have you done that is so "great" for this city? None of your groupies can itemize anything worthy of your staying. they just keep saying over and over how you have the right to sleep with a legal teen in the privacy of your own home, and that’s it. That’s what it boils down to being a good mayor these days. Oh yeah….your designer glasses? Guess they can relate to those….also.
