As Mayor Sam Adams returns to work today for the first time since admitting to WW last week that he had lied in 2007 about having sex with former legislative intern Beau Breedlove, one unanswered question is how Portlanders will respond to Adams.

Here’s one answer below from the Portland Business Alliance, which issued its statement yesterday. The PBA, the city’s largest mainstream business group, endorsed both Adams and his leading opponent, Sho Dozono, in last May’s mayoral primary. However, the group has been a strong Adams supporter, in large part due to his successful 2007 effort to lower the unpopular business license fee.

Dear Alliance Member,

This weekend, the Portland Alliance Board of Directors came together and developed the following position on Mayor Adams:

Portland Business Alliance Board of Directors
Statement on Mayor Sam Adams

While there are differing views within the Portland Business Alliance as to whether or not to call for the mayor’s resignation, the board agrees on the following:

An important quality of our elected leaders is their ability to inspire and hold the trust and confidence of their citizens.

We are deeply disappointed by the mayor’s admissions and are concerned about his ability to be effective when our city now faces many significant challenges.

Whether or not he stays in office should be based on whether he can lead our city effectively and with the integrity that all our citizens deserve.

The Portland Business Alliance is committed to an effective city government and a constructive business/city partnership.

Thank you,

Sandra McDonough

  1. Richard says:

Nothing says dignity quite like a city commissioner making new new "friends with beneifts" by making out in the mens room at city hall.

    Portland, Too Hip for Standards.

  2. Journalism? What's that? says:

Nigel and Mark, when was the last time you played hide the wet baloney with each other down there at the WW offices? Y’know, the stories are out there …

Anyone with stories of factually uncertain (better yet, totally unverifiable) sex encounters with Nigel Jaquiss, Mark Zusman, or any other "reporter" involved in whole tabloid circus are encouraged to report them on Facebook, or any other online resource you have.

    It’s open season!

  3. slingo says:

I see in the one article in the New York tines that 400 people showed up at city hall to suipport the Mayor. Wow, what a turnout for a city with around 600,000 population. I can see the city is really behond you Mayor.

  4. Deke says:

    Mayor Chickenhawk, please resign now.

  5. BB says:

It’s important to remember that the mayor needs the respectability to deal with responsible adult types, and not just the Keep-Portland-Weird-bike-and-streetcar-lobby".

This guy is going to be representing us at the state, with other cities, in Washington State, and even national conferences. Embarrassing.

  6. NewsToYou says:

It’s more than embarrassing that this man is keeping his job. His stinky thinking led him to thinking making out with a 17 year old was okay, having a 3 Month sexual relationship with this kid was fine, telling and coaching the kid to lie about the relationship was good, using the lie to smear a potential political opponent was acceptable and leaving out the part about making out with the kid in his "heartfelt" mea culpa was appropriate. At what point do we look at this man and say, yeah, you ain’t worth the trouble. I don’t need more bike lanes THIS badly.

  7. Gardiner Menefree says:

Perhaps the moment has finally arrived when all assertions — especially those concerned with the structure and functions of city government — by Our Own Private Nixon will attract the scrutiny to which they have needed to be submitted. Begin with any statements regarding PDOT.

Do not ignore The Other Four.

  8. annie says:

Sam is a sad and dangerous head case. He has no problems taking down Portland. His defenders follow his lead, and are content to throw out the reckless word HOMOPHOBE at any one questioning Sam’s choice. And Sam would like us to believe he’s so behind education.

  9. annie says:

Wow…I’ll be Sam is so proud to have you in his camp…
