As the Portland Tribune has also reported, two new ideas have surfaced in the discussions on how to pay for a Major League Soccer stadium as well as build  a new minor-league baseball stadium.

Commissioner Randy Leonard says the proposal for plugging the $15 million hole in the financial plan now includes raising the ticket surcharge at PGE Park and the new baseball stadium above 7 percent and imposing a new food-and-beverage tax at the two stadiums.

I just asked Mayor Sam Adams if the proposal for a new food-and-beverage tax would extend to the Rose Garden. And while he did not say yes, he also did not say no. “We don’t know,” he said.

"raising the ticket surcharge at PGE Park and the new baseball stadium above 7 percent and imposing a new food-and-beverage tax at the two stadiums."

Cuz you know what really brings in the spectators? Higher prices.

  2. Trivial Pursuit says:

    "We don’t know," he (Adams)said.

Code phrase for "YES, the new tax will extend to the Rose Garden, and to whom- ever-the-hell-else we decide to extort money from to get this deal done!!"

  3. Great Idea says:

Sam Adams is the worst fraud of a mayor that has ever existed on earth! Besides his molestation of 17 year old interns, lying through his teeth daily, I read that now he wants to tax Trail Blazer fans to give his buddy Paulson the extra $15 million he claims he needs for his pet soccer project, these people are some of the worst white collar criminals Portland has ever seen. Get this lying thief fraud molester out of Portland ASAP!

  4. Gary Marschke says:

Hey, what a great idea! Build a really expensive single purpose stadium by hoodwinking the public into borrowing millions based on some really high and undocumented income projections then tax the hell out of those poor slobs that want to go to a game to help us pay for it. Let’s see…$31 per ticket (ha, ha!) plus surcharge, plus parking, plus beverages, plus food, plus taxes…looks like a sound economic plan to me! You go Merritt – and say hi to Hank for me!!
    Sincerely, GW Bush
PS – who’s that Leonard guy? He’s got potential…maybe we should pair him with Palin in 2012? Yipeeee!!! Home on the range.

  5. jay says:

Fuck?! Why don’t we finance some movie theaters with public bonds and then let the movie companies keep the profits? Same idea, sports-for-entertainment is entertainment, with no redeeming value except to keep the populace too busy eating $6 hot dogs to exercise and dissent.

  6. Timbers Fan says:

Merritt and Henry Paulson are good people! Without them, we wouldn’t have our Timbers! Leave politics out of this! Don’t hate him because he is rich. He’s a Portlander now. Be nice. We need more rich people in Portland to help fix our economy. That’s what Paulson is trying to do.

  7. jj says:

Oh my gawd. Soccer draws those swarthy skinned people. Let’s do whatever we can to keep these people out of Portland. Portland should do nothing that would promote mixing between nationalities. Gawd forbid.

  8. Sgc says:

Glad to see you support the dual purpose soccer/football stadium.

But I’m not sure I want someone on my side who is so bad at math that they don’t know that an average includes much cheaper seats as well as more expensive ones.

But Gary Marschke doesn’t believe in all that fuzzy math, he goes with his gut! ‘Cause he’s The Decider!

I think George W Bush would be pretty proud of him.

  9. Chris says:

Y’all are unbelieveable. Both the Timbers and Mayor Adams will be around for a long time to come. Outside of these comment boards, a significant majority of this city will NOT support a recall. Save your hot air for somethign more important.

We are the Rose City!! U can’t stop us!!

    • annie says:

How would you know? Please…"we are the Rose City!!"
You are a total transplant, IF you even live here, so how would you know what the "Rose City is all about"? You smell as much like a true "Rose City" citizen, as the Rose air freshener in the men’s toilet in Portland City Hall….YOU TRANSPLANT!

  10. BB says:

"Don’t hate him because he is rich. He’s a Portlander now."

    Actually, he’s a Lake Oswegan.

  11. Joey says:

Currently there is a 6% tax on all sports tickets in Oregon that goes to a spectator fund. This fund is paying off loans for the Rose Quarter and other publicly owned parks. Merrit Paulson said he would increase the tax to 7% at PGE and the new Baseball site to pay off the Bonds that will improve/build the stadiums. He is also guaranteeing these bonds with his family’s money. A man is not going to throw away $60 million dollars. He is great for Portland, this is an awesome deal for Portland and I can’t wait till 2011!

"Portland should do nothing that would promote mixing between nationalities."

Folks like yourself should be required to complete elementary school and stop the in-breeding.
