Just in: The University of Oregon will own the “Made in Oregon” sign. But the new lettering will say only “Oregon.” And the “Old Town” designation at the bottom of the sign will remain.
The compromise, which city commissioners approved at City Council this morning, means Portland will not need to condemn the sign or spend taxpayer dollars in order to control the icon’s symbolism. “The outcome is clear,” says Jan Oliver, representing the university. “We are comfortable with it.”
We just posted a copy of the new proposed image at the bottom. (The other two here were humble suggestions from WW.)
