Department of Skateboarding

On June 1, the “Department of Skateboarding” will host a skate jam/contest at its park at 15 NE Hancock St. in conjunction with the Hometown Heroes Road to Nowhere Tour. Winners of the Portland contest will compete against winners from 37 other cities nationwide at a special event in this summer’s X-Games.

The idea is to let local, unknown rippers have a chance to get some spotlight. “It is mainly a local contest,” said Tracy Veenker, Retail Manager at DOS and affiliated skateshop Cal Skate, “But then the winners will get to go down and compete in California, which is pretty cool.”

Along with street cred for winning a local contest, the winner (and probably everyone) will get showered with free product from skate companies.

This is the first year that DOS will be hosting the contest although they have various other tours and events throughout the year. Registration costs $10 and starts at 4 pm at the DOS skatepark.
