Reed College President Colin Diver has published an open letter on the school’s website in response to a New York Times story that ran this week on the newspaper’s front page.
The Times story describes the private college’s struggle to provide financial aid amidst the recession and a declining endowment fund.
The letter by Diver reminds alumni and parents that Reed’s financial-aid policy has not changed and that the school actually increased its aid budget for next year.
Diver — affectionately known as “C-Divvy” to some Reedies — says the Times article “was based on extensive research and interviews and open access to Reed’s budgetary decision-making process.”
All in all, a transparent and even-keeled response — which hasn’t always been the case when it comes to more critical media coverage.

The Times article was a nice big kiss and not critical or negative in any way. If I were Diver I’d keep bringing it up too.
