Oregon’s job woes continue, as the May unemployment numbers out today show the state achieving a new record unemployment rate of 12.4 percent.
Even though the 12.4 percent rate is worse than the state’s previous worst mark of 12.1 percent set in November 1982, the Oregon Employment Department finds some good news in that the current freefall is moderating.
Between March and May, the state’s unemployment rate rose by 0.5 percentage point over those two months, which is less than the roughly 1 percent-a-month increase between October 2008 (when the rate was 7.2 percent) and March 2009.
One more stat: Oregon’s 12.4 percent unemployment is 3.0 percentage points worse than the national rate of 9.4 percent.
