Earl Blumenauer

U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) is back with a bill proposing to rename the U.S. Postal Service office at 630 NE Killingsworth Ave. the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Post Office.

The measure  failed to pass in the last congressional session. But Blumenauer spokeswoman Erin Allweiss says the Oregon Democrat is “feeling optimistic” the bill he introduced last Friday will pass this time with the companion bill that U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) introduced in the Senate.

The bill originated from an effort by two local letter carriers- Jamie Partridge and Isham Harris- who collected signatures supporting the renaming. The bill also has support from the Piedmont and Concordia Neighborhood Associations and the Sabin Community Association.

What? Why not Cesar Chavez? What ARE these people thinking? This would be a great way to solve the current street re-naming controversy.

Signed petions? Neighborhood Association support?? So, where’s all the racism??? I demand some pushback so the poor folks behind the Chavez debacle don’t feel so isolated. It’s amazing what can happen when smart choices are made instead of polarizing statements.

  3. Jen says:

Why don’t they stop trying to RE-name things and just name new things. Why spend all these tax dollars and small business dollars on RE-naming streets and buildings. There are plenty of new parks, streets, buildings, max lines and so on being built. There is NO need to re-name anything.

  4. maxvonsteele says:

Why does government feel the need to spend money. We already have a street named after Dr King, enough is enough.
