The state basketball championships for Oregon boys and girls at the 6A level are coming back to Portland.

The Oregon School Activities Association today announced a new agreement with the Rose Quarter replacing the multi-sport agreement with the University of Oregon that moved the tournament from Portland to Eugene in 2004.

The final 6A teams, eight boys and eight girls, will compete in the Rose Garden March 10-13, 2010, while the 5A championships will remain at MacArthur Court in Eugene.

“I’m convinced these tournaments need to be in Portland,” said OSAA executive director Tom Welter in a press release, citing that 39 of the 46 6A schools are between Portland and Salem. “This move not only places our events in a NBA facility and the best basketball arena in the state, it also will result in considerable savings in travel, meals and lodging costs for schools.”
