Beau Breedlove tells KGW that Mayor Sam Adams lied about whether or not the two kissed in a City Hall bathroom before Breedlove turned 18, and that he’s angry at the mayor for leaving him to look like the liar in the situation

In his first interview since Attorney General John Kroger released his report last week about the Adams-Breedlove affair, Breedlove insists his story about the incident never changed. Breedlove says Adams and his attorneys worked to get a statement from Breedlove that omitted the alleged kissing between Adams and Breedlove when Breedlove was 17 (The age of consent for sexual contact in Oregon is 18.)

In the interview, Breedlove describes his reaction now as “mad” and “angry” toward Adams after reading Adams’ account in the AG’s report.

“I assumed he would tell the truth in the investigation,” Breedlove tells KGW. “And I assumed there would be some kind of safety net to prevent people from lying.”

“Up until recent weeks, I really thought I had a friendship with Sam,” Breedlove said. “I really thought I could trust him.”

“I had no reason to lie,” he said. “Sam had everything to gain by lying.”

The mayor is on vacation this week. and a message this morning seeking comment from Adams spokesman Roy Kaufmann has not yet been returned.

UPDATE: Mayoral spokesman Roy Kaufmann emailed a statement to WW that refers to the conclusions from Kroger’s report but does not respond directly to Breedlove’s comments about that report and the mayor. Here is the email from Kaufmann:

Got your voicemail and saw your blog post. To answer your question, the Attorney General conducted an exhaustive five and a half month long investigation, interviewed nearly 60 people, reviewed thousands of phone calls and documents, and released a report clearing the mayor of any wrong-doing. The mayor appreciates the thoroughness of the investigation, and will continue to work tirelessly to make amends and deliver results for the city.

  1. Andy from Beaverton says:

Is anyone surprised? I wonder if all of Beau’s debts have been secretly paid off? That tard Kroger most likely didn’t look very deep into Beau’s cash flow.

  2. tw says:

Breedlove has a host of credibility problems, it’s true, but I think there’s a general consensus that his account of the kisses is believable.

  4. bitter old man says:

What I’m bitter about this AM,is the report that Sam LIED..AGAIN AND AGAIN.

The AG,needs to be investigated as well, for the unreal..5 months investigation of this guy, with zero findings.

  5. John Williams says:

Roy you’re still lying and I have a feeling Adams and all his people will never be able to tell the truth. Kroger’s report did not; clear the mayor of any wrong-doing, all it said was that they felt they didn’t have evidence that would stand up in court. There has clearly been tons of wrong-doing with Adams and his cronies and it just doesn’t seem to stop, we need to get these lying scoundrels out of here!

The AG “CLEARED HIM”…Well the people of Portland have not.

If there ever was a time to rise off our apathetic rear ends, it’s now.

Gay/straight/left/right, in between…recall this guy and send a message to his “intern” mayor…our wish is Sam goes, and the other guy shuts up.

  7. Schemes says:

“…released a report clearing the mayor of any wrong-doing”

No, he released a report saying that he didn’t have proper evidence or witnesses to bring a case. That’s very different than “clearing the mayor of any wrong-doing”.

Narrow legal questions aside, the mayor is simply unworthy to represent Portland. He’s a squirming liar.

  8. mr. voluptuous says:

    > The mayor appreciates the thoroughness of the investigation, and will continue to work tirelessly to make amends and deliver results for the city.

They are being VERY careful not to specifically deny what Breedlove is saying. Why? Afraid of a defamation lawsuit from Breedlove. I hope he files.

  9. irritated says:

DUH! Politicians are liars? Why that’s simply outrageous! If we fired every lying politician in office, there would be no more government.
Get real and let the man get on with being Mayor.

  10. iom says:

    Sigh.

Don’t you people have better things to worry about? Like the unemployment rate, the big sink-hole by the Fox Towers, the infirm and elderly in the upcoming heat wave– you know, more IMPORTANT AFFAIRS?

  11. Chakwande says:

I like the NO MINORS sign between them… very ironic given the circumstances lol

    • buddy says:

And those red eyes make him look like the devil.
That Beau is hot. I can see why Sam couldn’t keep his hands off of him.
Who ties his ties though? Attention to detail not always his strong suit. He looks loaded.

  12. brad says:

who is this beau breedlove guy

  13. Hucklebery Finn says:

“To sin in haste and repent at leisure is not a privilege available to those holding the public trust. Once we give such a privilege, we relinquish the strongest stone in democracy’s foundation. What is the purpose of moral and ethical standards, if we do not hold to them?”

    -Mark Twain

  14. brad says:

we should find out who this beau breedlove guy is and then ask him what the deal is on all this politix

  15. tangible says:

We know Sam has lied. We know he falsely attacked a political opponent in order to gain election. We know he coordinated a cover up of his unethical and corrupt behaviors. We know he has abused his position of power and influence to gain the attention of an adolescent. Does anyone really think that Beau is the only teenager that has attracted Sam’s attention? This kind of behavior and interest does not begin when someone turns 40. This incident with Beau only indicates that Sam has had this interest, but has not been caught before. Would any rational parent allow their teenager to be “mentored” by Sam now? What kind of representative is Sam for Portland? He should not be excused for his inappropriate actions. This is much like excusing a perpetrator who says they have done nothing wrong before. How can anyone trust and believe Sam? His motivation apparently is NOT for the best interest of Portland.

  16. anton_Chirurh says:

Go to KGW and watch the video. It’s amazing.

  17. [...] Here’s Part III of WW’s June 30 interview with Attorney General John Kroger. In this segment, Kroger discusses the ethics of Mayor Sam Adams’ attorneys as well as the conflicting accounts told by Adams and Beau Breedlove (Since WW’s interview earlier this week with Kroger, Breedlove has given his own interview with KGW in which he asks what his motive would be to lie) [...]

  18. jack says:

It sort of seems like Breedlove is struggling to hold on to the spotlight. You’ve milked this one dry Beau. Portland needs to move on.

    • tw says:

Unlike Adams and Kroger, who have nothing to lose, right?
Your understanding of politics is juvenile.

  19. cmac says:

WWeek has milked this story dry, sort of like how Sam milked Beau. They really probed into this story deep to get to the bottom of things.

  20. David Smoot says:

So it’s one of those “He said – He said” cases. Two grown men arguing about a kiss.

When we tire of the drama, can we return our attention to city business?

    • ya says:

      Two grown men?

You are missing the POINT- he was 17, a legal CHILD…and then he was asked to LIE about it while getting ‘paid off’ by OUR MAYOR.

We cannot trust him, he CANNOT STAY.

Portland deserves BETTER- this is not Detroit or Chicago, etc.
