Mayor Sam Adams’ campaign promise of developing an “export trade strategy” takes him to Taiwan next week just as the signature-gathering campaign to recall him from office also takes flight.

Last year, the then mayor-elect — in support of his “export trade strategy”  — traveled to China. (Adams said then he also went to help China “in its efforts to become sustainable.”) The China trip also included sightseeing at the Temple of Heaven and a lot of political flesh-pressing.

That trip in 2008 was sponsored by the National League of Cities, which is not paying for Adams’ latest Asian sojourn. We’re still waiting to hear from the mayor’s spokesman about who’s paying for Adams’ July 13-18 trip and other details.

Update at 5 pm: Adams’ spokesman Roy Kaufmann says the mayor’s trip will be paid for by the Portland-Kaohsiung Sister City Association. “Adams will meet Kaohsiung city officials and U.S. government representatives for discussions on sustainable development, environmental protection, and urban planning,” Kaufmann writes in an email. Adams will also serve “as the highest ranking U.S. official” to attend the World Games, Kaufmann adds. “He will officially open the U.S. pavilion at the Games, where Oregon wine and other Northwest products will be featured.”

  1. Robert Collins says:

Considering his mortgages are approaching foreclosure, if Adams is paying for the trip personally it shows how screwed up his financial priorities are.

  2. Schemes says:

Robert, I’d put the odds that he’s paying for this personally at less than zero.

  3. Allen says:

I am still waiting to learn who paid for his and TWO senior staff’s international trip to Belgium discuss biking/cycling. Anyone have any ideas about cost ($$$) and who paid for what? And while we are at it … why an international trip on biking when we have numerious cycling and biking clubs / organizations all over teh Pacific N.W.?

  4. Beth Slovic says:

The conference organizers paid for Adams and one staffer to go to Belgium, Adams’ spokesman said. The third person paid for the trip himself.

  5. Andy from Beaverton says:

How come the only places Sam travels to now is where the age of consent is only 16?

  6. tw says:

Looking forward to the day when the city is no longer burdened with all of Adams’ issues and problems.

    Sign that recall petition, peoples.

  7. Max says:

I think it is curious that Sam happens to have pushed the vote on renaming 39th to a session when he is out of town on a trip.

  8. Recall Sam Adams! says:

Once again Sammy runs when the heat turns up.

There is absolutely no logical reason for this guy to be doing any international travel on the public, or privately funded, dime. He seems to fancy himself a Hollywood mayor, and much more important than he actually is.

This guy has extraordinarily poor judgment, and seems to have zero understanding of how such frivolous trips (lump Belgium in with China here) will be perceived by the citizens. If he were serious about his job, then he’d hunker down and get to work on real problems within the city.

This is just one more of a myriad of reasons why he needs to be ousted.

Now, where do I sign that petition?

  9. Jack Peek says:

I told all of you this would happen when the recall of Vera Katz that I did failed.

Now get behind this one…or if you think it’s bad now, you have no idea what these idiots will next, if you don’t know, let this recall die and see what happens.”

  10. Tony Columbo says:

He is obviously thinking with his zipper down again. What is he projecting here? With the city on the verge of bankruptsy his own properties in foreclosure, himself undergoing a recall petition Adams goes on a junkett to another sex capitol of the world.

  11. Jack Peek says:

    YO!! Toney….dead on post!

  12. Jack Peek says:

Sam really is a “SHAM”, because over the years, watching him, as I have, there are two faces to Sam, the one at the microphone at an event, pandering, and the one rushing to his car…looking like he was about to throw up, that he had to breathe the same air, if the venue wasn’t just suited or completely set-up.

In the”hit piece”,inWWEEK, they failed to mention that it still isn’t just Krogers investigation, as the all deciding factor to recall SAM, there maybe a few questions more, as a basis to recall.

    Has he made good decisions?

Has he always represented all areas of this city “honestly” and fairly?

Did he consider the money in a budget process, and spend it on projects that covered the basics of government?

Has he told the honest truth to us and his staff on all occasions?

Is there a possible issue, that would not allow his total focus on the city.

Has he ventured into things we do not need in times of financial problems..(unfunded mandates)

If the answers to these questions, are your honest answers to yourself and not from peer pressure or groups, and your happy, don’t sign, if you know the answers you would give, and they don’t meet your honest answers to yourself…YOU BETTER FIX THIS ISSUE RIGHT NOW.

You will send a message to those around him, they work for you, at your pleasure ,not theirs.

Sam has made so many errors, personal, professional, all having an impact both short and long term on all who live here.

I’m going to sign the recall, I know what I have learned..all the hard way, and I’m sick of it.

I will confirm ASAP, the recall committee will have a table and folks to take your signatures on the recall of SAM ADAMS, at the upcoming gun show next Friday Saturday and Sunday, at the EXPO-CENTER in Portland.

PLEASE ATTEND THE SHOW…Support your second amendment right by attending, and bring a friend…another Portland voter to protect us from someone who will not protect us at all.
